The Communications Directorate is responsible for managing and developing the Bank's external and internal communications. We manage the relationships with key stakeholder groups including the Media and Parliament, as well as providing a Public Enquires function. We work with a wide range of colleagues to develop and deliver the Bank's programme of outreach and education, which includes building strategic partnerships with other organisations and running the Bank's Museum.
We also develop and maintain our external website and social media presence and produce the Bank's flagship publications, including the Inflation Report and Financial Stability Report. In addition we lead on the development of the Bank's strategic plan, helping to ensure it achieves its desired outcomes, monitoring and reporting on delivery of the plan to the Executive Director Committee, Court and the wider Bank.
The Communications Directorate is also responsible for meeting the Bank’s statutory obligations regarding the Freedom of Information Act, coordinating and responding to requests.

**Department Overview**
- The Content Development team is responsible for creating content that builds trust and understanding in the Bank of England and what it does. We also ensure that everyone’s communications are consistent with our branding and writing style.

We are a small team of project managers, content writers and creative designers who produce a wide range of products including:

- the Bank of England Annual Report
- short explainers for the public on the work that we do and how it’s linked to everyday life
- visual summaries for our Monetary Policy Report, the Financial Stability Reports
- analytical publications for researchers (Quarterly Bulletin and Bank Overground)

**Job description**

The job holder’s key responsibilities will be to:

- Produce creative and targeted content on the economy and the Bank of England’s role for a range of audiences - both public and technical. This will include creating content and giving editing advice for: our digital channels including social media; our flagship publications and education and outreach materials.
- Lead the production of the Bank of England explainer articles. Use research, analytics and AI to understand the questions the public are asking and work with internal teams to develop accessible content in response
- Support the area in measuring regular feedback on the content’s impact with our key audiences and incorporating that feedback into actionable changes in our content production
- Be the expert and go-to person for Plain English, driving its importance and helping others to create easily readable and accessible content.
- Maintain the Bank of England’s writing style guide
- Ensure that all content maintains a high standard in quality that is in-keeping with the Bank of England’s corporate tone and visual identity
- Work with the content development team to help them translate key messages into visual content such as infographics, animations and data visualisation tools

**Minimum Criteria**

**The role holder must hold the following skills and competencies**:

- Exceptional written communication skills. The job holder will need to be able to translate often complex issues into clear and engaging content. Some content commissions will draw upon existing work but some will need to be started from afresh and therefore require research and initiative
- Proven experience of working in a capacity of writing and editing content for a business with accuracy and clarity
- Ability to creatively conceive stories and ideas on how to explain who the Bank of England is, what is does and why
- Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to work effectively within a team of content and creative writers and designers, and occasional engagement with the public through citizens’ forums and focus groups.
- Ability to communicate with a wide variety of stakeholders at all levels
- The ability to manage a busy workload and prioritise effectively in a fast-paced environment

**Desirable criteria**
- Knowledge of the Bank of England’s roles and responsibilities
- Experience of writing about economics
- Experience of improving readability (eg Plain Language Commission)
- Ability to influence others in the way we communicate
- Familiarity with Google Analytics/Table
