**Job summary**:
The General Toxicology and Biomonitoring Programme within the Toxicology Department consists of toxicologists, who provide public health advice on a variety of different chemicals to colleagues within UKHSA, Government agencies and departments, and to the public. This advice focuses on the health effects of chemicals in water; soil and waste processes. We also advise on the public health aspects of the approval and use of; pesticides; veterinary medicines; cosmetics and consumer products. The Group provides the Secretariat, jointly with the Food Standards Agency, for three important Government expert advisory committees: the Committees on the Toxicity, Carcinogenicity and Mutagenicity of Chemicals in Food, Consumer Products and the Environment (COT, COC and COM). The Group has an active biomonitoring research programme.

The post holder will the authoritative point of contact and take responsibility develop a programme of work and research which aims to promote the use human biomonitoring to understand the health effects of chemicals in the environment and consumer products.

**Job description**:
The post holder will be expected to have a good understanding of the work of the whole remit of the General Toxicology and Biomonitoring Programme. The post holder will be expected to present the work to a wide range of audiences including Health protection colleagues in other parts of UKHSA, scientific experts and policy leads in DHSC and other government departments and agencies as well as presenting media statements. The role will require the assessment of complex toxicological and exposure data and assimilation of these data to provide human health risk assessments. This post will enhance UKHSAs capability in Human Biomonitoring (HBM).

This newly created senior post will lead a team of scientists and ensure UKHSA is able to respond to requests with regard to the use of HBM in public health incident management.

The postholder will be expected to show autonomy and present UKHSA views authoritatively.

UKHSA offers hybrid working for its employees - this means that whilst the role will be based in one of our UKHSA offices, there will be opportunities for an element of working from home. The balance between home and workplace working is to be agreed with the line manager, determined primarily by business need and in line with departmental policy.

Some business travel will be required to other UKHSA offices. Business travel between base location and any other UKHSA offices will be covered under the UKHSA Travel and Expenses policy.

Please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas. Relocation expenses are not available.
