An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full time Consultant Radiographer in Breast Imaging at the Mermaid Centre at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust (RCHT) in Truro. RCHT is the main acute healthcare provider for the population of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, providing a full range of services accessed by more than 600,000 people a year.

The Mermaid Centre is highly regarded as a centre of excellence in both screening and symptomatic services, with Breast Imaging and Breast Surgery supporting one stop clinics in the unit. We are a satellite training centre for St George’s NHS Trust London for the Postgraduate certificate modules; ‘professional practice in mammography 1 & 2 ‘.

The breast imaging team are seeking a highly motivated radiographer who is passionate about breast imaging and has professional ambition and drive This will require long-term commitment to the development and delivery of the Consultant Radiographer in Breast Imaging role.

Independent clinical breast examination to the same level of competency as a consultant radiologist.
Independent breast screening and symptomatic mammographic interpretation including formulation of radiology report to the same level of competency as a consultant radiologist.
Independent breast screening assessment and symptomatic breast ultrasound examination including image interpretation and formulation of a radiology report to the same level of competency as a consultant radiologist.
Independent decision making as to whether a percutaneous biopsy is needed in evaluating a potential breast abnormality.
Independent percutaneous breast procedures under free hand, ultrasound or stereotactic guidance to include cyst aspiration, abscess or seroma drainage, FNA, core biopsy, vacuum assisted core biopsy, localisations and any other relevant interventional procedures as required.
All to be performed to the same level of competency as a consultant radiologist.
Independent ultrasound examination, image interpretation and percutaneous procedures of the axilla as part of breast cancer staging including formulation of radiology report to the same level
of competency as a consultant radiologist.
Manage effectively a complex clinical workload including breast localisation procedures, biopsies, one stop symptomatic breast clinics, symptomatic ultrasound lists, symptomatic
mammogram reporting, breast screening film reporting and assessment clinics
Deliver bad news to patients and their relatives in a kind, caring but professional manner.
Deal with highly complex and sensitive information which requires the highest level of
communication skills to the same level of competency as a consultant radiologist.
Understand and undertake duty of candour discussions when required.
Communicate complex information at Multi-Disciplinary Meetings (MDT), be a core member
occasionally needing to deputise for the MDT lead.
Use of excellent decision making skills to ensure patient outcomes are optimised.
Expert practitioner practice with more extensive knowledge and skills than those of an advanced practitioner.
Promote evidence based practice into the practice of the unit in liaison with the Director of Breast Screening.
Develop consultant radiographer protocols that are disseminated regionally and nationally to share best practice.
As a registered practitioner you will be an authorised radiographer responsible under IR(ME)R for the justification and authorisation of medical exposures
