To provide a range of customer, safety, security and building services at Bristol

Central Library in an efficient and customer-friendly manner. To transport library

materials between Central Library and other sites.

Key job outcomes/accountabilities
- To ensure the security of the Central Library premises and contents,

customers and staff. To follow security routines and respond proactively to

problems identified. Use security equipment provided and respond proactively

to equipment failures.
- To safeguard customers and staff by preserving good order and responding

appropriately to emergencies. To monitor building safety systems and request

direct contractor support in the event of system failure. To act as a fire warden

during emergency evacuations. To respond proactively to other emergency

situations, involving library managers, other Council staff or emergency

services as appropriate.
- To provide assistance to visitors, either in person or by phone. To answer

enquiries or take messages. To help people following accidents or who have

been the victims of criminal activity.
- To ensure the provision of portering and distribution services as requested. To

load/unload vehicles, set up/dismantle displays and exhibitions, prepare for

and clear up after events.
- To ensure the cleanliness of the Central Library. To carry out routine cleaning

work and emergency cleaning, including the removal of bodily fluids, as

required.
- To provide maintenance cover for the Central Library. To carry out minor

maintenance tasks as required. To refer other maintenance issues to

managers, other Council colleagues or contractors as appropriate.
- To drive the Library Service delivery vehicle and load, unload, secure and

deliver library materials in a manner which complies with health and safety

requirements and transport law.
- To carry out daily and weekly checks, in accordance with transport legal

requirements, prior to driving the vehicle.
- To maintain the security of library buildings when entering and leaving and

report any security or building problems to the appropriate colleagues.

Additional Information
- Ability to work regular evenings and weekends and occasional public holidays

to meet the needs of the service as required, and ability to work in a variety of

localities and in different libraries as the service requires, and willing to travel

to any location in the city as required, within the provisions of the Bristol

Contract.
