An exciting opportunity has arisen to lead Writhlington School’s experienced History department.
- Have the necessary qualities to lead the team in successfully devising, developing, delivering and adapting an engaging and rigorous curriculum to Key stage 3-5.
- Be able to develop, plan and deliver high quality and engaging learning experiences for all students and support colleagues in doing the same.

Are you an inspirational, dedicated leader in and out of the classroom, with a track record of raising student attainment? Do you understand and are able to effectively articulate the criteria for the delivery of outstanding History lessons and support colleagues to do the same? Do you have a proven record of tracking individual pupil progress and making effective use of structured feedback? Are you enthusiastic and relentlessly passionate about sharing and engendering a desire to investigate the past in students and your colleagues? Are you committed to working collaboratively and reflectively with your colleagues in developing an engrossing, scaffolded and thoughtfully sequenced History curriculum? Are you an intuitive, engaging and adaptable classroom practitioner who sets and keeps high expectations?

If so, you could be the right person to lead our dedicated, high achieving and forward thinking History department. The department is committed to collaborative working, shared planning and has a strong team based ethos in which staff support one another and share their expertise.

All pupils at Writhlington follow History at KS3, a proportion of whom progress to take the AQA History specification at Key Stage 4 and 5. Writhlington is a school wholly dedicated to comprehensive education and you will be a person who is similarly committed to the principle of ensuring all make good progress in History regardless of ability and prior attainment. Pupils are taught in streamed ability groups at KS3 and mixed ability groups at KS4 and 5. You will be required to diligently and effectively plan your lessons in order to motivate and inspire confidence in less able students whilst challenging and pushing those who need to be stretched.

Writhlington School is part of the Midsomer Norton Schools’ Partnership and located on a large modern campus that benefits from exceptional media facilities, a 400-seat theatre and a Community Sports Centre. The school is committed to supporting staff in their professional development and working collaboratively to drive towards the goal of consistently refining pedagogy and practice with a pupil centred mindset.

New staff ideas are encouraged and there are a range of opportunities to lead and to contribute to its wide range of extracurricular activities: The History department runs a yearly WW1 Battlefields trip to either Belgium or France and a biannual trip to Berlin In addition to a Y7 trip to Chepstow and Tintern Abbey with plans to develop extra curricular opportunities further. The school has a large Combined Cadet Force, Duke of Edinburgh’s Award system and international links with Tanzania and Rwanda that support the 14-19 curriculum. The school is also home to the world renowned Orchid Project.
