The Marine Management Organisation (MMO) is an executive non-departmental public body of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

Driven by government’s aim for clean, healthy, safe, productive and biologically diverse oceans and seas, MMO’s purpose is to protect and enhance our precious marine environment, and support UK economic growth by enabling sustainable marine activities and development.

We are the independent regulator for England’s seas, professionally delivering service-focussed outcomes for our customers.

We are a team of around 400 people and combine our Newcastle upon Tyne and London operations with a local presence around the English coastline in Brixham, Beverley, Harwich, Hastings, King’s Lynn, Lowestoft, North Shields, Hayle, Plymouth, Poole, Portsmouth, Preston, Scarborough, Shoreham, and Whitehaven.

Job description

This is a really exciting time to join the MMO as we become an independent coastal state, embedding new repatriated functions and services with an increased focus on the protection and enhancing of the marine environment. The role of Principal Marine Officer is a pivotal position leading the North East Team. This is an area which is represented by three offices (North Shields, Scarborough and Beverley) and covers a large stretch of coastline from the Scottish border to Lincolnshire.

You’ll be leading and motivating a team of skilled marine assurance specialists while forging close working relationships with delivery partners. You will have a proven track record of successfully managing teams. Following a risk-based approach, you’ll be instrumental in assuring marine activity in this part of the north east which includes nationally important centres of fishing activity.

You’ll be expected to lead the North East Team with a professional enthusiasm while embedding efficient and effective practices across the team. This involves line management of Senior Marine Officers and being a representative within the Senior Leadership Team.

The role can be based in any of MMO's North East offices (Beverley, North Shields or Scarborough).
