Where in the world of OVO will I be working? Working within the Trading department, OVO’s Energy Traders play a vital role in developing and implementing hedging strategies to manage some of the key risks that face the business. This role is part of the Trading Front Office team and reports into the Head of Front Office Trading. The Energy Trader is responsible for the execution of Trades totalling £billions a year. To execute effective trades, the Energy Trader will define trading strategies to maximise value and minimise risk on their position. The Energy Trader is also responsible for developing analytical tools and techniques to support the Front Office and wider Trading team in analysing the market, defining which risks to take and what risks to mitigate. This requires a strong understanding and experience of the wholesale market and good analytical skills. What will I be doing? The Energy Trader is expected to build relationships with Trading Counterparties, executing UK Power and Gas market trades in line with agreed strategies and to structure and negotiate complex deals to manage and mitigate risks to the business. Responsibilities will include; Delivery of power and gas P&L targets against targets. Implementing OVO’s Power and Gas hedging strategies through negotiation of forward commodity trades with our wholesale trading partner. Optimising timing of wholesale energy trades within risk limits to secure value add. Analysis of wholesale markets including the development of models to support decision making. Development of suite of market analysis tools that provide key market information to the team. Management of existing open position and efficient booking of trades to ensure accurate position and risk reporting. Compliance with all trading policies and limit structures. Day to day ownership and development of key relationships with Trading partners. Identification of opportunities to deliver improvements in systems and processes. Monitoring market developments to enable clear and concise explanation of wholesale market movements and assessment of potential future wholesale price movements that will influence hedge strategy development. Providing information to stakeholders about the development of market conditions and help them understand how these changes influence the performance of the business overall. This role requires an individual who will relish taking ownership of decisions where material value is at risk on a daily basis. We are seeking someone with a passion for energy markets, an organised and structured approach and the drive to optimise all trading activity. Is this the job for me? An experienced Energy Trading professional with prior experience in an energy retail company preferred. A strong understanding of UK Wholesale Power and Gas Markets. A demonstrable track record of trading value add, particularly through the optimisation of flow business driven by retail sales. A track record of the development of analytical tools - especially working alongside and leading analysts - is strongly preferred. A strong mathematical background with application to the development of analytical models. Degree level (2:1 or better in numerical or science based subject preferred) Confident managing and manipulating large amounts of data. A creative thinker who thrives off direct responsibility and delivering value. Ability to own and operate critical business processes in a robust manner. Ability to critically interrogate model outputs and feedback to model owners to drive continuous improvement and accuracy. Strong interpersonal and social skills with an ability to create clear recommendations, respond quickly and act decisively. A good ability to explain complex concepts to stakeholders. Ability to support and develop other traders and analysts across Trading. Programming experience, ideally Python, beneficial. Database querying using SQL, essential. Strong Excel skills, essential.
