Milton Keynes, United Kingdom The Open University UK Full time

**Unit**: Faculty of Business and Law (FBL)
**Salary**: £36,333 to £41, 931
**Location**: Milton Keynes
**Please quote reference**: 20968
**Closing Date**: 3 July, 2023 - 12:00

**Change your career, change lives**

The Open University is the UK’s largest university, a world leader in flexible part-time education combining a mission to widen access to higher education with research excellence, transforming lives through education. The Open University has a strong research environment and infrastructure, enabling high quality research to be undertaken and published.

This role is a unique opportunity to join the Centre for Police Research and Learning, (CPRL) which is a unit within the Open University Business School (OUBS) that aligns itself to the Police Organisation and Practice (POP) department, both of which are located in the Faculty of Business and Law (FBL). The CPRL undertakes research, education and knowledge into practice projects in collaboration with policing practitioners across a wide range of disciplines and projects and the POP team delivers the Police Education Qualifications Framework. CPRL is led from FBL and has active involvement from all faculties across The Open University. There are over 80 academics at the OU with links to CPRL, who undertake research, develop courses and learning materials, or who are involved in knowledge into practice activities such as evidence cafés, conferences and workshops.

The project this role is attached to is focussed on evidence-led prosecutions in cases of domestic abuse. These are cases where a suspect can be prosecuted without the victim providing a statement or being present at court. The project will focus on expanding the evidence base gathered during a pilot project completed in 2023 and will analyse data across three additional police forces.

In this role, you will analyse police case files, conduct semi-structured interviews with victims and CPS professionals and run focus groups with police officers. Additionally, you will be required to help prepare and run knowledge exchange workshops across the three police forces.

**The role**

You will work with the research team and assist with both gathering and analysing the data. You will bring a keen interest in understanding how these types of prosecutions impact upon victims, what key factors determine effective ELPs and how the decision-making is conducted compared to more traditional DA prosecutions. You will contribute towards the overall planning and development of the project by attending regular online research meetings with the rest of the research team and attend the wider CPRL’s meetings. At all stages of the project, you will work closely with and receive support from experienced academics who have qualitative and/or quantitative research methods expertise and will benefit from the research infrastructure of CPRL. You will also participate in CPRL’s Working Group on Domestic Abuse which meets online every three months and involves academics and practitioners from CPRL member forces.

**Skills and experience**
- Hold a PhD (or be close to completion) in Social Sciences such as Policing, Criminology, Social Policy, Sociology, Psychology.
- Willingness to travel to the location of police forces and workshops
- A strong record of research (such as publications published or publications in pipeline/under review) and/or knowledge exchange (such as organisation of event(s) for knowledge sharing that is related to the position.

More information can be provided via a link to the Job Description.

**What you get in return**

We have a strong commitment to providing training and development in and beyond your current role. This includes thorough induction into the organisation and regular reviews of your training and development needs.
