The Community Dental Service post will provide experience in the treatment of a full range of patients within eligible vulnerable and “Special Care” groups, including children and young people, the frail older person, people with learning disability, mental health problems, anxiety and behavioural issues and complex medical and social histories. There are opportunities to gain a broad experience in the use of inhalation sedation and general anaesthetic cases. The appointee may also be involved in orthodontic treatment planning, intravenous sedation, comprehensive general anaesthetic cases to provide restorative and oral surgery treatments, screening, domiciliary care provision, oral health promotion and DCP training. The post-holder may also take the opportunity to gain experience working in a Mobile Dental Clinic and contribute to local quality improvement committees.

This is a 12 month post with the post-holder’s time spent between Community Dental Service Clinical Duties and Dental Public Health within the CDS and Public Health Wales fields.

The time spent within North Wales CDS will provide experience in the treatment of a full range of patients within eligible vulnerable and “Special Care” groups, including children and young people, the frail older person, people with learning disability, mental health problems, anxiety / behavioural issues and complex medical and social histories. There are opportunities to gain a broad experience in the use of inhalation sedation and short case general anaesthetic cases.

The appointee may also be involved in orthodontic treatment planning; intravenous sedation; comprehensive general anaesthetic cases to provide restorative and oral surgery treatments; domiciliary care provision; oral health promotion and DCP training. The post-holder may also take the opportunity to gain experience working in a Mobile Dental Clinic, HMP Berwyn and contribute to local quality improvement initiatives. The North Wales Community Dental Service is involved with the Welsh Government funded National Oral Health Improvement Programmes “Designed to Smile” which targets young children in high need areas and the National Programme for older people in Care Homes, as well as a number of other local oral health initiatives.

During the Dental Public health part of the appointment, the post-holder will gain a broad experience of relevant DPH issues such as public health and dental public health principles; collaborative working; strategic planning and epidemiology; involvement in quality improvement initiatives and meeting Local and National Oral Health Action Plan targets.

The DCT will be afforded the opportunity to carry out projects/audits and will be encouraged to produce a poster to submit to a National Conference and/or prepare an article for publication. He/she will be expected to present their work to public health/CDS colleagues.
