We have an exciting opportunity for a **Senior/Principal Bioinformatician**, who is passionate about understanding the role of the respiratory microbiome in health and disease to join the research group led by Prof Stephen Bentley.

**About the Role**:
We are seeking a talented, motivated bioinformatician with a keen interest in the microbiome. As a member of the team, you will play a key role in the successful delivery of project goals by advancing our understanding of the respiratory microbiome in pathogen dynamics and disease susceptibility. Through our partners in lower/middle-income countries (LMICs), you will have unparalleled access to structured samples and metadata to address fundamental questions around disease susceptibility and transmission with the microbiome.

**About Us**:
You will join a dynamic and collaborative multi-disciplinary team with expertise in pathogen genomics associated with pneumonia, meningitis and neonatal sepsis for research and laboratory microbiology. The Bentley team will provide you with opportunities to develop your skills and career through a series of training provided by Sanger and mentorship in the team.

**About You**:
As a member of the team, you will join a team engaged in generating, processing, analysing and interpreting genomic data at scale. You will be passionate about science and motivated to make an impact on generating knowledge on the respiratory microbiome. You will gain strong experience in bioinformatics and connect with like-minded scientists.

**Senior Bioinformatician**:
**Technical Skills**:

- MSc in statistical genetics, microbial genomics, metagenomics, bioinformatics, computational biology, infectious disease epidemiology or a related discipline
- Demonstrated expertise in the management and analysis of large datasets
- Demonstrated knowledge of at least one relevant programming language
- Experience in developing bioinformatic pipelines (e.g. Nextflow, Snakemake)

**Competencies and Behaviours**:

- Self-motivated to work independently and also collaboratively as part of a team
- Excellent communication skills and proven ability to interact professionally and productively with other members of a team
- Detail-oriented and highly organised
- A good problem solver

**Principal Bioinformatician**:
**Technical Skills**:

- PhD qualification or equivalent working experience in statistical genetics, microbial genomics, metagenomics, bioinformatics, computational biology, infectious disease epidemiology or a related discipline
- Demonstrated expertise in the management and analysis of large datasets
- Demonstrated expertise in building bioinformatic pipelines (e.g. Nextflow, Snakemake)
- Demonstrated knowledge of at least one relevant programming language
- Proven track record of publishing in reviewed journals

**Competencies and Behaviours**:

**Application Process**:
**Hybrid Working**:
We have adopted a hybrid working model to allow for flexibility between office and remote working. We can discuss this further with you at interview stage.

**Salary range**:(Dependent on skills and experience)**:
**Grade 1 **Principal Bioinformatician £52,152 to £61,000

**Grade 2 **Senior Bioinformatician £43,597 to £51,000

**Contract Type**: 3 years fixed-term (with likely extension)
