To play an active role working in this busy prestigious department and be involved in performing, under supervision, a wide range of physiological/clinical tests, including full lung function tests with body plethysmography, cardiopulmonary and specialised exercise tests, provocation tests, hypoxic inhalation tests and many others.

You will also be expected to participate in performing physiological measurements for research projects taking place within the Clinical Research unit where routine and special lung function tests will be performed in this high profile unit.

To perform physiological tests and measurements with the appropriate supervision.

To perform all relevant quality control procedures within the department including the performance of personal biological control procedures.

We are a small team of 16 staff passionate about physiology and effective delivery of services to our patients as well as having a active interest in research and personal professional development relating to scientific careers in the NHS.

**Job Summary**:
To be able to perform the procedures listed under physiological tests, with the appropriate supervision to be given.

To demonstrate care and respect, for both patients and fellow staff members.

**Main Tasks & Responsibilities**:

- Patient/Client Care (both direct and indirect)
- To be able to perform the procedures listed under physiological tests, with appropriate supervision.
- To be involved in Research Projects by performing appropriate physiological tests in the Clinical Research Facility and the Lung Function Department, as directed by the Lead Physiologist.
- To be involved in the departmental ‘extended hours’ lung function rota
- To perform all relevant quality control procedures within the department including the performance of personal biological control procedures.
- To help maintain and repair departmental equipment in conjunction with more senior staff and the Clinical Engineering Department.
- To help with specific respiratory tests when required on the hospital wards.
- To disinfect and clean all departmental areas and equipment if and when necessary.
- To take personal responsibility for compliance with all Trust and Departmental infection control policies and procedures. See Trust policies and Departmental local health and safety rules.
- To perform general departmental administrative duties and complete data logs when necessary.

Physiological Tests

Routine Tests
- Lung volume measurements using body plethysmography
- Airways resistance measurements using the body plethysmograph
- Spirometry/ Flow volume loops
- Gas transfer measurements
- Bronchodilation tests

Specialised tests
- Pulmonary compliance by the oesophageal balloon technique
- Exercise studies of ventilation and gas exchange
- Continuous Laryngoscopy Exercise studies.
- Submaximal Anaerobic Threshold Exercise Test.
- Blood gas analysis
- Oesophageal pH studies.
- Oesophageal impedance studies
- Methacholine challenge / PC20 studies
- Anatomical shunts
- Dynamic Compression/Hyperinflation tests
- Maximal voluntary ventilation tests
- Hypoxic Inhalation Challenge. Both standard test and special test using the body plethysmograph
- Cold air challenges
- FeNO tests.
- Any other tests as deemed necessary by the head of the Lung Function Department

Policy Development
- To implement the trust policies and protocols within the department.

Service Development
- To implement existing departmental procedures ensuring accurate data is obtained in an environment with the best possible patient care.
- To help perform complex audits and research trials within the department.

People Management
- To engage in the trust appraisal process and to aim to complete objectives set during appraisal.
- Involvement in Continuous Professional Development (CPD) and attendance at relevant internal/external courses, seminars, lectures etc in which appropriate information can be gained relating to physiological, scientific and medical matter

Communication
- To supervise and encourage patients during their time in the department and deal with any queries or problems in a suitable manner. When appropriate, discuss results with patients using discretion, awareness of patient confidentiality and cross any barriers to understanding.
- To communicate effectively with department colleagues and other members of the trust in all aspects of patient care and respiratory physiology.

Resource Management
- Safe use of complex equipment involving reporting of faults, routine maintenance and monitoring of stock levels.

Information Management
- To ensure all patient data is stored in a suitable manner.

General
- To ensure all mandatory training courses such as Manual handling, Fire, Adult and Paediatric Resuscitation, Infection Control, Health and Safety are attended on an annual basis and the knowledge gained adhered to.
- To be able to perform any other duty as deemed necessary by the departmental Lead Physiologist
