After visiting Smart Works, 69% of clients secure a job within a month, gaining financial independence and transforming their lives.

The Smart Works service is delivered in London, Greater Manchester, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Newcastle, Reading and Leeds. Over the past ten years, Smart Works has helped over 30,000 women. It is our mission that any woman who needs our service should be able to find her way to a Smart Works centre.

In April 2022, we launched a new Three-Year Plan that will see the charity double the number of women helped annually from 5,000 to 10,000 women a year.

A key pillar of the three year plan was to create group functions that directly support the growth and operations of Smart Works nationally. In September 2022, Smart Works created a People function to build a best in class employment and volunteer experience for our community.

About the role

Smart Works is looking for an interim Head of People to cover a temporary vacancy in the People team. With an immediate start, we require a passionate and driven HR leader to lead the People function and provide hands-on, operational support.

Reporting directly to our CEO and as an active part of our Senior Leadership Team, the interim Head of People will be a collaborative leader with a strong record of cultivating a vibrant, high-potential environment and delivering results in a People-focused role.

This is a hybrid working role, based in London with regular working from home.

Duties and responsibilities
- Overseeing all day to day aspects of the employee lifecycle at Smart Works including recruitment and onboarding, learning and development, performance management, engagement, employee relations and exits.
- Managing essential processes throughout Q4 such as the annual appraisals cycle, pay reviews and graduate scheme recruitment and development.
- Leading and developing a small team to provide hands-on HR support and advice across the charity.

Personal specification

Essential Criteria
- Substantial leadership experience as a HR generalist with comprehensive knowledge of all aspects of people management.
- Confident in working independently and as part of a lean team.
- Makes decisions at a senior level whilst exercising good judgement and common sense.
- Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, confident in consulting, presenting and engaging at all levels.
- Demonstrable experience of building trusted relationships with stakeholders at all levels to confidently influence and advise on all aspects of people management.
- Strong expertise and a practical understanding of HR laws, regulations, best practices and HR trends to ensure compliance and innovation.

Benefits, terms and conditions
- Day rate based on £50,000 - £60,000 pro rata depending on experience
- Temporary role for approximately four months, with an immediate start.
- Part time role 24 hours per week, based in London with flexible working from home.
- All successful applicants must provide two satisfactory references and complete a Basic DBS check.
