**Job overview**:
**We require a full-time Consultant Virologist (40 hours per week) to support the Medical Virology Consultant team at Nottingham University Hospitals.**
**The post holder’s primary focus will be the delivery of the clinical virology service, whilst providing support to the diagnostic virology service, infection control and specialty service users such as Infectious Diseases and Sexual Health Services. There is currently no on-call requirement associated with this post.**
**The applicant will hold (or be within 6 months of obtaining) a CCT or equivalent in Medical Virology.**

**Main duties of the job**:
This Consultant Medical Virologist post is designed to support the provision of a high quality infection management service in Nottingham. The Virology laboratory is part of the Microbiology service, which is based at the QMC Campus. Clinical duties will be required at both QMC Campus and the City Hospital Campus.
The post holder’s primary focus will be the delivery of the clinical virology service, including:
- Participation in the clinical duty rota
- Laboratory further work rounds
- Results interpretation and authorisation
- Investigation and management advice on complex virological infection
- Participation in specialty ward rounds and MDTs
- Collaboration with the Infection Prevention and Control team to investigate and manage matters relating to IPC and outbreak management
As required, the post holder will also be expected to support diagnostic and clinical service development, infection control and training and education.
Applicants will be required to have full and specialist registration (and a licence to practise) with the GMC (or be eligible for registration within six months of interview).
As well as the above, UK trained medical applicants should also be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or within six months of award of CCT by date of interview. Applicants that are non-UK trained will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT
**Working for our organisation**:
The Microbiology laboratory is a large NHS laboratory serving both NUH campuses, as well as Nottinghamshire Healthcare Trust and Clinical Commissioning Groups with a total population of ~640,000. The current service workload based on recent activity data is approximately 918,000 with 604,000 bacteriology and 314,000 virology/serology work types a year, two thirds of which is acute hospital diagnostic work and the remaining one third of the work is for general practitioners.
The department is actively involved in the investigation and clinical management of virological infection and undertakes regular liaison with specialist services such as Critical Care, Paediatrics (including a PICU and two large neonatal units), Clinical Haematology (including bone marrow transplantation), Oncology, Renal Transplantation and dialysis, Hepatology, Infectious Diseases and Genito-Urinary Medicine (both providing HIV services). The virology laboratory is also the Infectious Diseases in Pregnancy Screening (IDSP) provider for the Nottinghamshire area.
**Detailed job description and main responsibilities**:
The appointee, in collaboration with the other consultants and senior scientists, will be expected to fulfil the following duties within the agreed Job Plan:
- To provide a comprehensive Virology service, including full clinical liaison, to:
- Clinicians at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.
- General Practitioners in the Greater Nottingham health community
- Other users of the Virology service in the Greater Nottingham health community
- To be involved in the collection of epidemiological data in close liaison with the UK Health and Security Agency and to be involved in surveillance and prevention programmes as appropriate.
- To participate in the development of new diagnostic virology techniques to meet the increasing demands of clinical users. This includes the involvement in investigations of outbreaks of infectious disease and liaison with advice to local CCDCs.
- To pursue research actively in medical virology and its associated epidemiology.
- To be involved in the training of Specialty trainees, Trust Grade doctors, and senior Scientists.
- To contribute, as required, to the teaching of virology to undergraduates and postgraduates within the School of Life Sciences, University of Nottingham.
- To take part in Medical Audit and Quality Control within the laboratory and in other fora.
