Parents First Worker

Mountain Ash, United Kingdom Rhondda Cynon Taf Full time

**Rhondda Cynon Taf Council is pleased to offer a position for a Parents First Worker within MAGU.**

The Magu Project delivers an integrated care pathway for pregnant women and their families across early intervention and edge of care services, that focuses on building skills and resilience and reducing risk. A single agreed early intervention approach will deliver the opportunity to prevent children entering care at birth as well as provide consistency and continuity for families whose care requires step to statutory intervention.

The Magu Project has been developed in line with the Welsh Government Strategy of Keeping Families Together and reducing the number of Looked After Children in Wales. The term “Magu” translates from Welsh as “to bring up, rear, nurture, raise, gain” and it promotes the ongoing long term nature of the support required to deliver better outcomes for children and their families.

The Magu Team works with families from 10 weeks of pregnancy through to when the child turns one, to provide bespoke support and skill building to ensure children can remain in their care. MAGU will continue to support the family even if the outcome of assessments and work is that their child can no longer remain in their care.

This post will form part of the MAGU Team in Children’s Services and will support parents from 10 weeks of pregnancy through to the child turning one, to ensure the child can remain in their care.

For this position you will hold Children and Young People Level 3 in Health and Social Care (QCF) or predecessor NVQ Level 3 in Caring for Children and Young People or ability to achieve the QCF within 2 years of being allocated an assessor.

The primary duties of the role are:
To work specifically with parents of unborn babies and post birth whose children are at risk of becoming Looked After by the Local Authority and those who have had children permanently removed from their care.

To focus on increasing the protective factors for parents who are at risk of having children removed from their care and reducing risks by providing intensive tailored emotional and practical support.

To undertake programmes of intervention with families that focus on building parenting skills and capacity and supporting the development of positive attachment and bonding using evidenced based parenting programmes and parent infant interaction tools and materials.

To work in partnership with colleagues from across Children’s Services as well as external organisations as part of a multi-agency support package to maximise the benefits for individuals and families.

To provide direct one to one practical support to parents to attend court and legal meetings, contact meetings with their child and access health appointments and develop safe and supportive social networks.

To identify and build on any family supports including who can provide emotional and practical support for parents in the immediate and longer term.

Please refer to the Job specification for further roles and responsibilities.

All our practitioners have the chance to influence the development of our work and are supported by a strong, experienced management team both at strategic and operational levels.

We recognise that social work is professionally and personally challenging and demands considerable levels of skill, commitment, and enthusiasm. We offer a dedicated in-house Learning and Development Centre which actively supports practitioners at each level to maintain their skills and Continuous Professional Development.

Our Social Care Departments have benefitted from comprehensive and significant investment in recent years, and we have responded to this by strengthening preventative services which aims to add capacity to the front line.
