Associate Practitioner for Point of Care

Point of Care Testing (POCT) is the performance of diagnostic laboratory tests undertaken by non-laboratory personnel in a near patient setting. As an Associate Practitioner in POCT, the post holder is working under supervision of qualified scientists for the delegated tasks required for the delivery of a comprehensive POCT support function in partnership with the BCU POCT Lead, the POCT Site Leads for each site and the POCT Higher Laboratory Support Workers.
This is a generic role and is limited to those tasks for which training has been given and competency evidenced.
The post holder will be required to undertake their responsibilities within the POCT section of Blood Sciences and may be asked to cover at other sites as and when required
- Work in a hazardous, and potentially stressful, environment where work patterns may be disrupted by frequently changing, unscheduled demands from clinicians, colleagues and other staff, and be able to prioritise workload to the overall benefit of the patients.
- Prioritise emergency and urgent work and deal with this according to laboratory procedures.
- To use the departmental computer systems to input and retrieve information and to identify issues.
- Use judgement to react appropriately to unacceptable results and carry out remedial action if indicated.
- To work within priorities set by the point of care Department within BCUHB to work independently and manage own workload on a day to day basis.
- Act as the first point of contact for POCT related enquiries, working unsupervised within the scope of competencies
- To Travel to clinical settings to support POCT training and service delivery
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

General

Communication
- To establish good working relationships at all times with colleagues, medical staff and others as required within the Dignity at Work policy
- Act as first point of contact for internal and external enquiries regarding the BCUHB POCT service. The post holder will be required to communicate on a range of matters from routine enquiries (such as sample requirements), to the provision of complex data and information (e.g. the technical limitations, and method-based sources of error) for each of the specific POCT assays
- Communicate directly with POCT equipment provider's customer service, sales and training personnel to facilitate and plan visits, demonstrations and training events.
- Extract information from IT systems and communicate POCT equipment provider's engineering personnel with routine data as required e.g. in relation to poor calibration data, quality control results, error codes, failures etc. in order to support fault diagnosis and trouble-shooting
