Location: This role can be based at either the BGS headquarters in Keyworth, Nottingham or at our offices in Edinburgh, which are situated on the Heriot-Watt University campus

**Salary**: salary range is £31,931 to £34,709 (depending on qualifications and experience)
Grade: UKRI - Band D
Hours: Full-time - 37 hours a week (a small amount of remote working may be available following an induction period and in line with BGS policy)
Contract type: Fixed-term appointment (12 months)
Closing date: 22nd February 2023

**About the role**

The British Geological Survey (BGS) is looking for a highly motivated and experienced communications professional to take on the exciting role of Public Engagement Lead. The Public Engagement Lead is a wide-reaching, varied, and challenging role, central to the implementation of the BGS corporate and science strategies and UKRI’s public engagement strategies.

The primary purpose of the role is to develop, manage and lead the corporate portfolio of the BGS public engagement and education action plans and programmes.

You will take the lead and implement, with the public engagement team, the new BGS public engagement strategy across the organisation, ensuring that it aligns to the new BGS Strategy. This will also be a pivotal role in managing the Geoscience Discovery Partnership with the Natural History Museum, leading engagement activities around major capital and publicly funded BGS projects as well building partnerships across the engagement landscape.

The outcomes and impacts of BGS public engagement ensure that BGS publicly funded science and activity is open, understood and used to cultivate evidence-based debate and inspire people about the value of our science. Other responsibilities of the role will include:
To horizon scan for public engagement funding opportunities, working with the BGS Senior Research Funding Manager.

To lead and run existing public engagement projects, such as the Critical Minerals Intelligence Centre and UK Geoenergy Observatories (working alongside the BGS Communications Lead).

To lead, line manage and motivate all other members of the Public Engagement Team.

Active involvement in BGS’s stakeholder mapping and engagement.

Leading on and organising parliamentary engagement events and initiatives.

**About you**

You will have a degree or related qualification in Public Engagement and/or have a good amount of comparable relevant work experience.

We are looking for someone with strong project management skills and who has experience of delivering engagement and communications campaigns across multiple platforms and working with multiple partners, both internally and externally. You will also have a good track record in delivering evaluated campaigns that make a real difference.

This post will require frequent travel within the UK.

The British Geological Survey (BGS) is an applied geoscience research centre that belongs to UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and is affiliated to the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). It is a world leading geological survey whose core mission is to advise government of science related to the subsurface and to undertake applied research to solve earth and environmental issues, both in the UK and globally. It is funded directly by UKRI, as well as through research grants and private sector contracts.

BGS has an annual budget of approximately £60 million and employs 650 people. It has two main sites: a head office in Keyworth near Nottingham, and the Lyell Centre, which is a collaboration with Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh. BGS works with more than 150 private sector organisations, has close links with 40 universities, and sponsors approximately 100 PhD students each year.
