St Margaret’s Hospice has been at the heart of the Somerset community for over forty years, providing compassionate care and support for individuals, their families and carers who are facing a life-limiting illness. Our services are consistently rated as ‘Outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), and our skilled and compassionate workforce of over 350 colleagues and over 900 volunteers are key to our success. We have an income of £14.5m made up largely of donations from our generous and supportive community; trading across our 31 retail units; and funding from our NHS partners. We have a track record of innovation, from pioneering home hospice care in the 1980s, to our current investment in the latest digital tools such as AI.
Our Chief Executive will be retiring this year and we are now seeking to appoint an inspirational new leader. You will continue to build from a strong foundation and oversee the long-term sustainability, strategic direction, and impact of the charity as we recover from the difficult pandemic years and navigate the challenges we face today.
Reporting to our Board of Trustees and supported by an experienced Executive Team, your key responsibilities will include:
- Providing visible, strategic leadership to deliver innovative, modernised, and sustainable services that are patient-centred and community needs led.
- Building a shared vision of the values and culture within the Hospice that inspires ambition, provides purpose and impact that is positively recognised as leading edge.
- Developing strategic, financial, and operational resilience with opportunities to diversify and grow effective revenue streams, service provisions and workforce capability.
- Enabling data and digital innovation to bring creative solutions and shape new thinking.
- Advocating inclusion, both internally with our colleagues and volunteers, and in the access to and reach of our services.
- Ensuring we meet our statutory, legal, and regulatory responsibilities.
We are seeking an inspirational, compassionate leader with the ability to influence and champion our cause, acting as the key ambassador for the charity and building strong, productive relationships. An understanding of healthcare, whilst desirable, is not essential at this point. Experience of forging strong partnerships, leading change, embracing digital and technological advances, generating innovative opportunities, and good business/financial management skills will all be important qualities in the next period of our development. Above all, you will need a passion for the difference our staff and services make to people’s lives and model our values by being patient-centred, respectful, brave, informed and driven, self-aware, and compassionate.
