Role Summary

The Paintshop Assistant will assist the Head Scenic Artist to ensure the finishes on all scenic items are to a high standard and are a true realisation of the designer’s brief.

They will carry out duties to enable the paintshop to operate in a safe and efficient manner and will have a hands-on role in painting and texturing scenic items, following instruction from the Head Scenic Artist. They must be flexible and adaptable sometimes assisting with props, scenery or stage management duties.

Specific Responsibilities
- To assist the Head Artist in realising designs to the satisfaction of the Designer providing the highest standards of scenic painting possible
- To work alongside casual, freelance and apprentice colleagues in carrying out paintshop duties
- To assist in creating a safe and tidy work area by tidying, storing, cleaning and maintaining equipment and carrying out other housekeeping duties at the behest of the Head Scenic Artist or Head of Scenic Workshops.
- To work to design and installation deadlines as per production and technical schedules. This will require some long hours and overnight and weekend working.
- To assist in Workshop, or Props when called upon to do so.
- To assist the Head Artist in realising designs to the satisfaction of the Designer providing the highest standards of scenic painting possible
- To attend the relevant production and design meetings in place of the Head Artist if required
- To create paint samples, and to carry out costing and purchasing if requested.
- To keep pace with industry developments and undertake further training and development as required.
- Ensure that sustainable methods of delivering on all output are considered, developed and implemented where possible
- To support and actively participate in the Birmingham Rep’s apprenticeship schemes
- To contribute to excellent communication between departments and teams

General Responsibilities

The post-holder may be required to undertake other reasonably determined duties and responsibilities within the organisation which are appropriate with the level of the role without changing the general character of the post.

The post-holder may also be called upon to carry out duties that would not normally be associated with the post on a temporary basis where there is a strong organisational requirement for that to happen. The post-holder would be given appropriate training and equipment to carry out any duties of this kind.

This role forms part of the Paintshop team within the Construction Department which is overseen by the Head of Scenic Workshops.

Person specification

You must have

If you do not demonstrate that you meet all these criteria you may not be shortlisted.
- Practical experience, knowledge and understanding in paint and texture techniques
- Excellent communication and organisational skills
- Ability to be an integral part of a team but also to use initiative and work independently
- Ability to work under pressure and follow instruction, meeting deadlines and continue to pay close attention to detail and accuracy
- Some ability to accurately interpret models and reference materials
- Ability to work at height

It’d be great if you had
- Experience in using paint frames
- Some experience in using access equipment
- First aid certification
- Some appropriate knowledge of current Health and Safety practices and practical implementation
