**Student Welfare Officer**
**Location: Inchinnan**
**Grade F**:
**Salary Range: £27,166 - £35,057**

Our main objective is to create a culture that helps all of our customers strive towards a workforce that is reflective of today’s society.

**Role Purpose**:
To provide a high level of support to students in all matters of day to day life beyond the classroom, and towards success, with first line concern for their mental, physical, social and emotional well-being.

**Role Accountabilities**:

- Deliver introductory workshops to students on their arrival at college to familiarise them with key aspects of college life
- To Fully Comply with CITB Safeguarding Policy and provide Welfare support in keeping with Every Learner Matters
- Work within the ‘Every Learner Matters’ framework, actively promoting the five outcomes throughout college business and activities with students
- Act as ‘loco parentis’ as appropriate for those students who are under the age of 18 years
- Ensure appropriate action is taken to investigate and resolve incidents and problems that arise on a day to day basis. Record and document within the relevant systems.
- To provide administrative support to apprentices and their employers in relation to personal details, medical information, attendance ect.
- Identify factors and situations which contribute to some students becoming vulnerable and help them to mitigate such developments by assisting them to develop and deploy problem solving strategies and to select other appropriate interventions
- Deal with highly sensitive and confidential cases, which at times will involve external agencies
- Provide first line advice and guidance sessions, and signpost to specialist services as required
- Actively promote and encourage student participation and engagement to include student forums, focus groups and newsletters. Encourage the ‘student voice’ and use as a vehicle to communicate with the college management team
- Keep pace with and monitor new trends that may impact on and / or affect students
- Organise and manage recreational activities off campus, ensuring these are rewarding and enjoyable, compliment college life and add value to the college experience
- Provide transport to off-campus activities, and on occasions medical emergencies
- Provide first aid at work, to include mental health issues, and refer as necessary.
- Share information etc with other members of the wider NCC team to ensure student centred focus is maintained
- Actively promote and implement the dignity and respect agenda: challenge and aim to correct inappropriate behaviour
- Ensure bullying of any description is dealt with promptly and effectively
- Actively promote and implement the equal opportunities and diversity agenda: challenge and aim to correct inappropriate behaviour
- Deal with incidents of anti-social behaviour and take appropriate corrective action(s)
- Undertake conflict management and implement de-escalation interventions, ie assessing situation, making judgements and taking appropriate actions in the given circumstances of the incident
- When necessary under college procedures test learners for Drug and alcohol misuse and report incidents.
- Maintain discipline and give words of formal advice as necessary
- Identify and escalate more serious incidents to next level of the process

**Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience**:

- Post holders will have good level of education, minimum 2 GCSEs (or equivalent) to include Maths and English
- Specialist work experience, and an SVQ in Youth Work, and Advice and Guidance, minimum Level 5; (or equivalent)
- Specialist work experience and an NSPCC / LCIS Certificate in Child Protection and Safeguarding; desirable SVQ Level 5 through CPD (or equivalent)
- Counselling experience; ideally certificated foundation course as minimum, up to Diploma through CPD.
- First Aid at Work Certificate to include mental health elements
- Full clean driving licence; Local Authority assessment to drive minibuses
- Intermediate level of knowledge of health, safety and welfare, both within the business and within the industry
- Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills
- Self-motivated and self-starter
- Ability to quickly assimilate information from a variety of sources
- Quick thinking, assertive and decisive
- Competent to deal with emergencies, and with the capacity to remain calm whilst under pressure
- Experience in conflict management and de-escalation interventions, in most situations by verbal means
- Ability to demonstrate sound judgement making, to include when under pressure
- Ability and confidence to work without supervision, to include managing one’s own workload and prioritising often rapidly changing operational demands
- Customer focused, with capability to manage the customer relationship
- Experience of working in a training / education environment with young people
- Competent use of the business’ IT systems
