**The role**:
The Risk Assurance team is a key player in supporting the University by bringing an independent perspective to organisational challenges; acting as a ‘critical friend’ to explore and highlight the causes of risks we identify. We work with colleagues across the University to help find solutions to challenges with business processes and controls, support joined-up working across teams, and foster lasting improvements. Our team is situated in Finance Services, although our work covers the whole University, and we also lend our expertise on risk, governance and controls to supporting wider divisional and institutional initiatives where appropriate.

The purpose of internal audit is to provide independent, objective assurance and consulting support designed to add value and improve the University’s operations. As part of the University’s Risk Assurance team, the role of the Senior Internal Auditor is to undertake and contribute towards the full internal audit cycle, to evaluate and improve the design and operating effectiveness of the University’s risk management, control and governance processes. The work will encompass risk management framework, control framework, financial reliability and compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

You will be joining a small, collaborative team of professionals who each own and deliver a portfolio of audits set out in the annual plan alongside other ad hoc requests and duties.

Currently you would need to come into the office a minimum of once a week, with the Risk Assurance team currently having team days in the office on Mondays and Tuesdays. You will have the opportunity to work in the office on additional days of the week if you choose.

**What will you be doing?**:
You will be accountable for performing independent, risk-based analyses covering the full governance spectrum of the University; helping to ensure that key controls are in place and functioning and that risks are understood and being managed as appropriate, particularly highlighting where the University’s strategic goals may be at risk. In addition, you will be expected to challenge views of senior members of the University where appropriate to ensure analysis is robust and reflects a true and fair position.

You will need to demonstrate a clear ability to understand and analyse complex issues, considering academic, regulatory, legal, commercial and financial aspects, whilst also being a strong influencer and mediator. You will be fully accountable for all work performed, but report into the Internal Audit Manager and have a dotted line to the University’s external provider, RSM (who are accountable to the Board of Trustees for the University’s Internal Audit function).

You will play a significant role in driving the implementation of internal audit actions leading to improved compliance across the institution, as well as proactively advising and supporting University management on initiatives to enhance the overall governance, risk management, and control environment.
- You have relevant internal audit (e.g. CIA) or accountancy (e.g. ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CIPFA) qualifications and/or substantial internal auditor or similar experience
- You are a ‘big-picture’ strategic thinker and are able to evaluate the wider impacts of risks and issues identified in audits in line with broader strategic objectives
- You are experienced with analysing complex and ambiguous information to solve problems, draw conclusions and make constructive recommendations
- Customer service is important to you, and you can communicate effectively using written and verbal skills with internal and external stakeholders
- You value being part of a team and are naturally collaborative and pragmatic in your approach
