School of Design
The School of Design offers programmes that engage with a broad spectrum of design from the industry-focused, through collaboration with engineering and science, to the experimental and theoretical. With a strong culture of innovation, experimentation and debate, as well as research degrees at MPhil and PhD level, the School explores the boundaries of knowledge in the fields of industrial design, design engineering, product design, service design, critical design, systems and services, social innovation, new materials, globalisation and the discourse between international pedagogies and manufacturing.
We are seeking to appoint an outstanding practitioner and researcher in the expanded field of Textiles. The person appointed to this position will support the Head of Programme through the delivery of the MA across Textiles (across the specialisms of print and mixed media but can also include knit, weave and smart têxtiles), School and College-wide units The post also includes day to day academic management, administration and communication, the encouragement of critical design thinking and research and contribution to the development of programme research activity in line with the Programme’s, School’s and College’s Research strategic plan.
The Textiles Programme is part of the School of Design and currently has a total student complement of 150+ students studying towards MA (RCA), as well as postgraduate research students. The Textile programme’s philosophy embraces the complexity of this multi-faceted discipline with a new vision of the têxtile practitioner of the 21st century, informed by research landscapes and new directions afforded by material thinking.
The programme is developing its relationships with industry and commercial clients for student projects, KE and other activities. These collaborations will draw from and inform the new landscape and direction for practice and thinking. Our exhibition, publication and other dissemination activities are also being developed to reflect our programme philosophy and values as we engage with new practices and thinking.
