The Scottish Qualifications Authority is Scotland’s national awarding and accreditation body. We are trusted to oversee thousands of qualifications that are available in schools, colleges and workplaces, not just in this country, but around the world.

Our Policy, Analysis and Standards Directorate has recently been established to place research and analysis at the heart of all SQA’s work. Building on and strengthening the organisation’s work to date in this area, the purpose of the Directorate is to ensure that decisions made about SQA’s qualifications, assessments and wider services are based on a robust evidence and analysis. We also seek to ensure that this evidence and analysis is used to inform decision making across the wider education system.

We are now recruiting for an exciting new role in this Directorate as part of the growing leadership team. The Head of Policy Higher National and Vocational Qualifications (HNVQ) has been created to provide functional leadership to the Policy - HNVQ team whilst also being a key member of the Directorate’s Management Team.

This role will lead SQA, and the future organisation, in the development, maintenance and review of policy for the design, development, assessment and quality assurance of SQA’s Higher National and Vocational Qualifications. This will require an evidence-based approach based on engagement with SQA's key stakeholders and with other awarding bodies, qualification regulators and professional association to ensure a strong awareness of related and relevant policy developments elsewhere in Scotland, the UK and internationally.

The role offers the opportunity to make a significant contribution to SQA’s ongoing work and to the changes coming to the Scottish education system to ensure that the design of and policies supporting SQA’s Higher National and Vocational Qualifications reflect current and emerging policy directions including the outcomes of the Independent Reviews of Qualifications and Assessment and of the Skills Delivery Landscape that will report in the Spring of 2023.

Applicants should as a minimum be educated to SCQF level 9 or have significant experience in a similar senior post in education and training and with a particular focus on SQA’s Higher National and Vocational Qualifications.

Applicants will also be expected to role model the behaviours associated with SQA’s values (Trusted, Progressive and Enabling) in order to develop and sustain a productive and positive culture.

SQA offer a fantastic benefits package in return for your talent whilst also offering hybrid working as default. These include but are not limited to a career average pension scheme; staff well-being and health assistance programmes; development opportunities and 27 days annual leave in addition to 14 days public holiday.
