To provide the highest standard of quality assurance for prosecution files being submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).

**Location**:Exeter

**Contract**: 3 months

**Work hours**:Full time - Hybrid

**Salary**: £11.32 per hour

**Main duties and responsibilities**
- Review and evaluate the contents of prosecution files. Specifically to:

- examine the quality of evidence contained in the file ensuring it covers the 'points to prove’, referring to the Police National Legal Database (PNLD) as required
- assess file content to ensure completion and compliance with the National File Standards and other national, regional and local guidance/policy including Code for Crown Prosecutors, Disclosure Manual, Victims Codes etc)
- check the file categorisation ensuring that the correct anticipated plea has been recorded (Director’s Guidance on charging).
- Identify any gaps or areas of non-compliance on charging, file structure and evidence, raising these with the officer in the case and their supervisor as required. Complete a record of the file review including the assessment, feedback, tasks sent to theinvestigating officer and timescales for return using relevant IT. Escalate through line management where necessary to ensure time limits are met.
- Where minor omissions are identified, take action on behalf of the investigating officer to resolve those issues.
- Where necessary, prevent the forwarding of a reported case to the CPS in order to address deficiencies with the investigating officer. For charged cases, prior to first hearing, highlight to CPS any case file deficiencies to enable them to consider optionsincluding withdrawing the case, amending or adding charges or offering no evidence to the court.
- Provide robust but objective feedback to officers on how to improve the quality of prosecution files.
- Where there have been significant and regular failings in quality, highlight this information to an operational supervisor for consideration and action including intrusively overseeing the further compilation and completion of files.
- Record the quality of files on the relevant database and other workload information on systems as appropriate.
- To support development of a 'right first time’ approach to file build across the Force, provide specialist advice and guidance to officers and police staff drawing on knowledge of the Criminal Justice System as a whole, ensuring compliance with policy andlegislation throughout.
- Conduct research using PNLD and the internet in order to maintain and update knowledge of the relevant guidance and legislation including National File Standards, Director’s Guidance on Charging, Code for Crown Prosecutors, Disclosure Manual, MagistratesSentencing Guidelines and Victims’ Codes.

**Essential**
- Monitor and evaluate the quality of case files
- Provide specialist advice and guidance
- Input, retrieve and present data using a computer
- A detailed, in-depth knowledge of Court, CPS and police procedures linked to the creation and use of case files within the criminal justice system
- Proven ability in the researching, preparation or supervision of building quality prosecution case files
- Demonstrably skilled in delivering detailed, objective but supportive feedback
- Proven highly effective skills of influencing and persuading and of robustly defending a particular position under significant pressure to change it
- Proven ability to work to tight timescales with mínimal supervision
- Excellent skills in using CJS IT systems such as Unifi/GRS and STORM
