We wish to appoint a talented researcher to undertake research in the field of biosensor development for real-time personal health monitoring in collaboration with ULTRA-PCS in a project funded by the EPSRC Impact Acceleration Award. This is a full-timpost initially funded for 12 months.

This project aims to develop sensors that can non-invasively monitor an individual’s health. These biomedical sensors will be capable of monitoring key physiological parameters (lactate and ions in sweat, for instance) that together may indicate stress, dehydration, shock, etc. To ensure the trustworthiness of the data being used in decision-making, the sensors will be developed to incorporate biomorphic principles, that is the ability to monitor the performance/degradation of the sensor itself and adapt accordingly.

Much of the sensor development will be conducted using the facilities within the Chemistry Department and the School of Engineering at Lancaster University, with the industrial partner supporting this activity and leading on sensor integration. Your required tasks include:

- Conducting research into biomedical sensors for detecting key physiological parameters, and identifying potential biomorphic capabilities, such as co-sensitivities.
- Developing prototype biomedical sensors using a range of chemical techniques, and supporting their integration into communication and complementary sensor systems.
- Participation in project meetings; preparation and presentation of talks, posters and reports to disseminate the results of these studies.
- Preparation of progress reports for describing the results of the project.
- Participation in national and international conferences and workshops to present the results of the project to a wider audience and to learn about current advances in the field.
- Preparation of journal papers for publication of project findings.
- Participation in writing new research proposals that build on the expertise developed in this project.

The Chemistry Department and the School of Engineering at Lancaster University has excellent research laboratories and associated research facilities to support the experimental development of the sensors, their integration and demonstration of the technology.

You must hold a PhD or have equivalent experience in electronic or mechatronics engineering, chemistry or equivalent. The position is available to engineers/scientists with experience of developing sensors.

Lancaster University is campus-based, and located close to the Lake district in the north-west of England; the University also enjoys excellent public transport and national rail links.
