In Regions Group we aim to improve outcomes for children, families and learners by accelerating system improvement and reform through active intervention and by better aligning the Department’s operations and users’ needs at a local and regional level.
We will:
- Bring together improvement and intervention work in Children’s Social Care, SEND and Schools as well as area-based programs like Opportunity Areas and Education Investment Areas
- Maintain the stewardship of the school system and, working with the Future ESFA, provide a unified voice to academy trusts and to individual Local Authorities at a local level
- Set DfE up to deliver for and respond more effectively to local needs and to understand how local contexts impact on children and learners in a place, particularly vulnerable and disadvantaged children and young people.

The children’s services improvement and intervention role that the Vulnerable Children’s Unit (VCU) undertakes provides support and challenge to Local Authorities to help them to improve the quality of their Children’s Services.
The post-holder will provide analytical and administrative support to the East team on a range of meetings and different sets of data.
The Unit is located across 4 sites (London, Cambridge, Manchester and Nottingham). This post can be located in either the Cambridge, London or Nottingham office. There may be travel to local authorities across the East region and occasional travel to other DfE offices.
**Job description**:
This role reports in to and provides support for the Regional Improvement Support Lead for the East for Children’s Social Care. The post-holder will work closely with the Regional Lead to ensure that the Regional Lead and DfE has an accurate understanding of performance of Children’s Social Care within the region. In addition, the post-holder will provide administrative, briefing and business case support to help drive improvements in the delivery of Children’s Social Care across the region.
In its regulatory role for the academy sector, Regions Group is responsible for making enquiries with trusts about safeguarding complaints or concerns reported about an academy. Our role is to ensure that academy trusts have in place effective arrangements to safeguard and promote the welfare of pupils attending their academies.
- Developing their expertise in understanding this work and the role of the region here;
- Developing the skills of others so they can manage safeguarding case
- Managing their own safeguarding casework
- Managing the systems used for Safeguarding casework
Key responsibilities:
- Supporting meetings as requested
- Maintaining the data overview for the East for both the quarterly data and the Vulnerable Children and Young People data.
- Providing written briefings on relevant local authority data to senior colleagues within DfE and managing IRIS correspondence.
- Identifying local authorities which are at risk of failing services through analysis of the data and any soft intelligence gathered.
- Developing, and maintaining, a profile of the Local Authorities and key stakeholders in the region (eg Director of Children’s services, Chief Executives).
- Supporting with developing business cases and grant offer letters for improvement funding, as well as undertaking grant assurance activities.
- Accurately recording Project and Programme Management information for the East region ensuring that all entries are accurate and completed within the deadlines.
