Gastroenterology & General Internal Medicine (GIM) Registrar

Fixed-term 6 months from February 2024

Applications are invited for the post of Gastroenterology and GIM Registrar, employed by Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. This post offers an exciting opportunity to gain experience in gastroenterology and general medicine.

Homerton Healthcare is a Foundation Trust and teaching hospital in East London. It is a trauma unit and was the designated hospital for the 2012 Olympic Games. It is within easy walking distance to Homerton Overground station, with easy access to major transport links.

The post holder will be involved in all aspects of management of Gastroenterology in and out patients including outpatient clinics, endoscopy, ward work, GIM on call/acute care rota.

In addition the post holder will be given the opportunity to train in Interventional Endoscopy & Simulation facilitation (dependent on post holder skills/training needs). The Simulation Suite was officially opened in 2011. It is equipped with hi-fidelity mannequins including a Laerdel Sim-Man, Sim-Junior, Sim-Baby and Sim-NewB. The suite also has laparoscopic, GI-Bronch and ultrasound simulators. There is a busy calendar of postgraduate and undergraduate courses being run by a diverse multi-disciplinary faculty, including mobile simulation.
- The delivery of 2 outpatient clinics per week
- Endoscopy - dependent on post holder skills/training needs
- Inpatient duty (shared)
- Referral duty (shared)
- ACU duty (as per GIM rota), usually as 4 week blocks (2.5 blocks in 6 months)
- MDTs (UGI, LGI, IBD) optional attendance (UGI, LGI, IBD, Virtual biologics clinic)
- Departmental meetings, Morbidity & Mortality meetings, Endoscopy User Group meetings
- Audit & Quality Improvement Projects

Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is an acute hospital located in the east London Borough of Hackney. We are a merged hospital and community service trust. Homerton Healthcare is attached to the St. Bartholomew’s and the Royal London School of Medicine and Dentistry (part of University of London).

Homerton became one of the first ten NHS foundation trusts in the country in April 2004. This allows the Trust to secure certain freedoms to facilitate innovation in the way services are developed and provided.

The Gastroenterology Department at the Homerton Hospital provides a comprehensive service for patients with gastroenterological problems whilst being fully committed to developing, teaching, training and research at all levels. There are specialist weekly IBD, Nutrition, Pancreatobiliary and Liver & Hepatitis clinics with support from nurse specialists and dieticians. The department includes 7 full time consultants, 1 nurse consultant, 3 specialist nurses, 2 nurse endoscopists, 2 NE Thames Gastroenterology ST3+ registrars, a SIM gastroenterology Fellow, an Acute Medicine ST3+ registrar, a Core medical trainee and 2 foundation doctors.
1. Clinical Duties

The postholder will be involved in all aspects of management of Gastroenterology in and out patients:

1. Teaching

The postholder will participate fully in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes, and will be expected to take a specific lead on teaching, developing and advising junior doctors and nursing colleagues.

1. Audit and Research

The postholder will be expected to take an active part in multi-disciplinary audit and to be involved in attempting to improve the quality of care to patients, timeliness of communications with General Practitioners and clinical risk management.

There is opportunity to participate in translational research with a view to achieving posters/abstracts/publications.

1. Management and Administration

At the Homerton the postholder will be required to take part in the management and administrative duties within the department. He/she will be expected to attend departmental management meetings as required and present cases at our Morbidity & Mortality meetings.

1. Continuing Medical Education

Continuing Medical Education is an integral part of the post. The appointee will be encouraged to ensure that his/her full entitlement to CME/study leave is taken.
