**Purpose of the Role**

The Yard Operative is responsible for cleaning the service areas to maintain a safe environment for all persons who access these areas. To maintain the service areas in such a way that all rubbish is removed regularly and that the centre is machine washed, including cleaning all internal and external low level glass and walkways.

**Key Responsibilities**

**Responsible to: Asst. Operations Manager / Cleaning and Security Manager**

**Main Duties**
- Act as an Ambassador to the centre at all times by providing an excellent standard of customer service.
- Undertake the full range of cleaning duties required, such as machine cleaning corridors, sweeping and mopping stairways, damp wiping fixtures and fittings, keeping drivers’ toilet clean, following site cleaning schedule.
- Remove refuse from waste bins to appropriate compactor by hand sifting waste material to obtain maximum recyclate.
- Removal of all food waste for recycling and polythene for baling.
- If suitably licensed and trained; use the company vehicle with the trailer to move waste material from South Service Yard. Or alternatively if licensed just the vehicle to ferry passengers or carry out site related tasks.
- To maintain the service areas in a safe and accessible condition to allow for 24 hour operation. Ensure that the Service Areas are kept free of slip and trip hazards.
- To maintain external display glazing in a clean and presentable condition.
- To ensure the external areas are swept and any debris removed prior to the centre opening.
- To carry out external gritting on the advice of the Duty Controller.
- Clean gent’s toilets and assist mall cleaning operatives during times of staff shortages.
- To report in any defects found while carrying out their duties around the centre.
- To assist the Building Maintenance and other departments where required.
- To monitor usage of salt and spill kits reporting any shortages to the Control Room.
- To monitor delivery drivers ensuring they keep to walkways and delivery docks are kept clear.
- Work with security to assist with incidents, as required.
- Wear uniform and protective clothing as instructed.
- Complying with all relevant instructions regarding the safe use and storage of cleaning equipment and materials.
- Complete timesheets and other necessary paperwork.
- Undertaking the duties in such a way as to cause no hazards to staff or visitors.
- Attend training courses as required.
- Cover the duties, and hours, of other yard staff such as holiday or sickness, as requires.
- Remain vigilant to suspicious packages or vehicles and report to security.
- To carry out any other reasonable request from Centre Management.

- To have the customer’s welfare and visiting experience at the forefront of your mind, ensuring that you provide the best customer service at all times
- To ensure that you provide a friendly welcome to every customer when covering ‘door’ duties
- To ensure that retailers are treated with respect and courtesy and that a professional working relationship is maintained
- Undertake any training in Customer Service Best Practice, as and when required
- Act as a Brand Ambassador for Buchanan Galleries at all times

**Skills, Knowledge and Experience**

**Essential**
- Reliable, helpful and well-presented and with excellent people skills.
- Ability to work in a team, or alone under the direction of Centre Management.
- Pleasant manner and efficiency in relaying messages and taking instructions.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Ability to deal with confidential information.

- Able to work under pressure to deadlines.
- Careful and conscientious with an aptitude for attention to detail.
- Confident enthusiastic personality - the role involves retailer liaison to improve and maintain communications between centre management and tenants.
- Observant
- To be able to work the hours and shifts in accordance with conditions of employment.

**Desirable**

To have good working knowledge of the Centre, it’s retailers, and the city centre. Also to have a good understanding of local city centre amenities to help with tourism, retail, accommodation and transport enquiries, and/or the skills to source relevant information quickly and efficiently.
