We have an exciting opportunity to join Surrey Police as a Detention Officer on a 1 year contract.

This role would ideally suit someone who has previously worked within the Prison service or is an ex Police Officer looking to return to the Police Service.

You will be working a rotational shift pattern and you will receive enhancement on your pay to reflect the shift work.

**DUE TO THE CRITERIA OF POLICE VETTING ANY APPLICANT MUST HAVE CONTINUOUS UK RESIDENCY FOR AT LEAST 3 YEARS**

Our Detention Officers routinely deal with conflict and their resilience to this is tested constantly. Not only is this physical conflict but also they need the ability to deal with people that 'just don't like you'. It is hard work dealing with detainees and it can be a negative environment because of this. Staff who do not do so well in this role are those that are reticent in volunteering for tasks and do not 'pull their weight' in the team.

The most important skills are those that are professional - and strive to always do the role to the best of their ability. Employees need to meet a good standard of delivery, enjoy teamwork. They must have excellent communication skills and confidence in working with all members of society. Detention Officers need to be able to diffuse situations, have a positive approach, demonstrate empathy, and offer reassurance.

Key Accountabilities:

- To provide a safe and secure environment for those within police detention and support other custody staff to ensure that the rights and entitlements of detained persons are protected.
- To be responsible, at the direction of the Custody Officer, for the health, sustenance and welfare of detained persons. Particular emphasis to be placed upon: (i) preparation and provision of food / refreshment in accordance with legal requirements (ii) issue of prescribed medication(s) in accordance with relevant legislation (iii) minimise potential risks to the personal safety of detained persons and others within the custody suite (iv) close monitoring of detained persons who are ill or intoxicated (v) the supervision of regular periods of exercise (vi) the supervision of Juveniles in detention
- To maintain vigilance and to keep under control any person detained at or escorted within a police station.. To assist police officers and other designated staff to keep control of detained persons who are violent, uncooperative or potential escapees. This includes the use of such force as is reasonable in the circumstances.
- To maintain the security and integrity of visits to detained persons by legal representatives, relatives and other authorised persons
- To enter information correctly onto the custody computer system, ensuring its integrity and validity, utilising search facilities appropriately and producing relevant custody records and documentation for detained persons, in accordance with the relevant legislation. This includes carrying out relevant PNC and CIS checks for every detained person held within the custody environment
- To assist in the maintenance of custody records of actions taken in relation to detained persons, to ensure compliance with legislation and ensure that relevant data is accurately recorded on paper and electronic systems, and that records are produced to the highest standard with Data Quality foremost.
- To assist Custody Officers in the risk assessments of detainees and to bring to the attention of the Custody Officer any issue relating to a detained person that may pose a threat or increased risk to themselves or others, or who is in need of additional care.
- To search persons in accordance with the relevant legislation, policy and procedures, whilst respecting the rights and dignity of the individual. This includes; (i) Non-intimate searches and seizure of items found (ii) Searches or examinations to find identifying marks or determine identity and to photograph the same (iii) Intimate searches
- To be responsible for the handling, recording, storage, movement and return of detainee's property ensuring all property is accounted for.
- To be responsible for the taking of photographs, DNA samples, finger and palm prints for the purposes of establishing the identity of detained persons in connection with ongoing enquiries and investigations. This includes; (i) The taking of fingerprints without consent (ii) The taking of non-intimate samples without consent (iii) The requirement to give speculative search warnings in relation to fingerprints and intimate/non-intimate samples (iv) Requiring certain categories of persons to attend the police station to have fingerprints takenRequiring certain categories of persons to attend the police station to have a DNA sample taken. (vi) The removal of face coverings to facilitate photographing.
- To be responsible for the taking of footwear impressions with the approved equipment, for the purposes of assisting ongoing enquiries and investigations, including the requirement to give speculative sear
