Research Assistant

The “gold standard” for arthropod digitisation are 3D models with accurate shape, texture and colour information. However, no accessible platform is currently freely available to create such models. 3D digitisation is the gold standard because it (i) it removes the need for further direct handling of the specimen, so reducing risk of damage; (ii) provides equal access to valuable specimen across the globe; and (iii) archives more information than photographs which are 2D by necessity. We have developed a prototype of an open-source platform - _scAnt_ - which automates the capturing and processing of 2D images from variable viewing angles; these photographs can then be processed further into 3D models with photogrammetry software of choice.
**Duties and responsibilities**:
You will help to develop _scAnt_ from a prototype into accessible and affordable equipment by implementing several changes and improvements to its original design, the control software, and the documentation. This development will be accompanied by ongoing end user-engagement through external collaborations, to ensure that _scAnt_ meets the core needs of its likely userbase. The ultimate aim is to design and produce a _scAnt_-kit, which reduces the technology entry barrier, maintains quality and keeps cost low, so unlocking the potential of _scAnt_ to be used for digitisation by experts and amateurs across the globe.
The position is funded through a recently awarded ERC Proof of Concept Grant to the PI (David Labonte). David's multi-disciplinary group addresses biological questions with a quantitative mechanics framework, including how climbing animals can rapidly control the stickiness of the adhesive organs on their feet, how biological ceramics combine strength and toughness, and the biomechanical determinants of plant feeding in insects. **Duties and Responsibilities**
You will
- implement improvements to the hardware (motor control, stability of CNC slider, update design, replace power supply)
- implement improvements and add new features to software (software-hardware communication, extended camera support, colour and camera position calibration module, background removal update, platform independence)
- Interact with collaborators to ensure end-user needs are met
You will also have the opportunity to supervise MEng/MSc students. There are opportunities to visit laboratories across the world for collaborative work.
