Senior Phlebotomist

Through the collection of blood samples from Patients, to assist the workforce of Pathology in providing a specialised, diagnostic service contributing to the clinical care of the patient, to enable diagnosis and subsequent monitoring of the effectiveness of treatment given.

Using skills gained through the Phlebotomy training scheme, the individual will be expected to develop judgement and utilise learnt specialist skills and scientific knowledge to assist in the provision of a high quality and timely Phlebotomy service.

The Phlebotomy service covers all areas of the Trust including satellite units such as

Donald Wilson House and Children’s Assessment unit / Paediatrics Outpatients Department

To perform Phlebotomy ensuring mínimal distress and discomfort to patients always.

To take blood samples from patients, which will assist in the provision of routine analysis of specimens within Pathology in accordance with laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and Phlebotomy training manual.

The post holder will not be expected to possess any formal qualifications though some academic interest in biological sciences would be advantageous. The post holder will be expected to have received training in phlebotomy techniques and be able to demonstrate a satisfactory level of competence such that there is mínimal distress and discomfort to patients throughout the venesecting experience.

Full training appropriate for the use of the laboratory computer system will be given and the Trust PAS computer system where appropriate. The post holder will also be instructed in the operation of any laboratory equipment that they may be asked to operate according to current laboratory safety guidelines

Phlebotomist's will have reached appropriate level of competence, to take blood samples from patients, independently on ward's and in a clinic, which will assist in the provision of routine analysis of specimens within Pathology in accordance with laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and Phlebotomy training manual.

1.2 To maintain high standards of safety ensuring the Health & Safety of self, other staff, patients, and visitors to the laboratory.

1.3 To ensure that the arrangements for the security of buildings, equipment and chemicals are carried out in accordance with laboratory policy.

1.4 To perform phlebotomy ensuring mínimal distress and discomfort to patients always.

1.5 To ensure high standards of accuracy when recording, transcribing, and checking patient demographics in particular the labelling of blood tubes.

2.1 To communicate any relevant information within the team to ensure the continual and efficient running of the service.

2.2 To seek advice from senior staff in response to patient enquiries and offer appropriate guidance strictly according to departmental policies.

2.3 To actively participate in team meetings and to inform effectively both verbally and at hand-over.

2.4 To communicate effectively with patients, relatives, and carers to obtain consent for venepuncture to t take place.
