Managing Editorial Coordinator
We are seeking a Managing Editorial Coordinator to join our Transworld team on a full-time and permanent basis.
Transworld is one of PRH’s nine publishing houses, containing three distinctive imprints: Bantam, Doubleday and the newly created non-fiction imprint Torva. We publish a wide range of commercial and literary fiction and non-fiction, by bestselling authors from Lee Child and Terry Pratchett to Sophie Kinsella, Ruth Jones, Kate Atkinson and John Boyne, and from Bill Bryson and Richard Dawkins to Mary Portas and Tess Daly.
**The Opportunity**
You’ll be assisting in the smooth running of Transworld’s Managing Editorial department, responsible for back-up for the team and liaising with acquiring editors, production and design colleagues on all aspects of the copy-editorial processes, ensuring that the editorial aspects of the critical path are adhered to, and editorial standards are maintained. You’ll be responsible for managing work sent to freelance proofreaders, for external and internal offset titles, reprints and other backlist titles, and will be a lynchpin of Transworld’s digital jacket circulating system.
Joining a team of five, you’ll be reporting into the Managing Editorial Director and supporting both them and the Managing Editor for Transworld paperbacks. As the coordinator, you’ll be responsible for:
- Editorial and administrative back-up for the team
- Acting as a focal point between Editorial, Production and Design
- Allocating work to our freelance proofreading pool, managing the traffic of page proofs to freelancers, editors and authors, and supervising the payment of the freelancers’ invoices, including coding invoices and monitoring payment
- Managing and progressing work on external offsets, reprints and other backlist titles
- Assisting with the jacket circulation system, monitoring deadlines and progress, and taking charge of this when required
- Proofreading jackets and covers, and marketing/publicity materials, including book proof covers
- Arranging and attending fortnightly progress meetings, and other departmental meetings as they arise
- Maintaining and organising departmental records: eg editorial work records, progress and costs in the relevant spreadsheets/Biblio
- Any other tasks assigned by the Managing Editorial Director
- Covering where possible for Managing Editors in their absence
Over time, there may be scope for you to progress a small number of titles through copy-editing and proofreading stages under supervision, although this won’t be immediate.
**Skills/characteristics**
We are looking for a conscientious, organised and systematic person to join us. You’ll need:
- Strong personal organisation and time-management skills
- Ability to prioritise a busy, varied workload, and work under pressure on multiple tasks
- Impeccable grammar, spelling and proofreading skills and exceptional attention to detail
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively to a wide range of people
- To be a team player with interpersonal sensitivity and diplomacy
- Initiative and flexibility
You’ll also have:
- Understanding of trade publishing in general, and the editorial/production processes in particular
- A strong interest in the written word/language
- Some experience of copy-editing and proofreading
- Excellent digital skills
**How to apply**
As part of your cover letter, we’d like you to answer the following question in no more than 200 words: _This role will require juggling and managing multiple tasks. Please tell us the top three things you take into consideration when prioritising your workload._
**What you can expect from us**:
**Salary**:£28,500 - £30,000 depending on how your skills and experience align with the role, plus bonus and benefits.
While our offices are places to connect, collaborate and celebrate with colleagues, we recognise that flexibility about where you work is just as important for doing your best work and for your wellbeing. For this role, there are meetings and activities that you will need to attend in person at our offices in Embassy Gardens. We are open to discussing the exact balance of office to remote working through the recruitment process.
