Caernarfon, United Kingdom Afon Goch Children's Homes Ltd Full time

Do you want to make a difference?

Would you like to work with and support looked-after children in a residential environment? Do you want to work with children on a long-term basis and see them progress and develop? Then this job could be for you...

Afon Goch Children’s Homes Ltd is a small (and growing) company that runs two children’s homes, an independent school and an Adventure Education programme. We believe in making a difference to those children who need it most. We are committed to providing the best possible care for children who, due to their past life experiences, have difficulties in establishing and maintaining relationships.

Up to five children are placed across our homes at any time, usually on a long-term basis. We treat children with unconditional positive regard, whilst also providing each child the opportunity, resources and support for lasting change. The children are empowered to take their rightful place in the world; offering a better future both for them as individuals, and for society.

We aim to provide children with the opportunity to explore positive experiences and the opportunity to heal past trauma.

This means challenging cognitive distortions and helping the child build new internal working models. Through an increased understanding of cause and effect thinking and appropriate decision-making, children learn better and more effective coping strategies.

You will work as part of a therapeutic team providing care and support to children placed at Afon Goch and Caban Aur. You would be working directly with children (often one-to-one), providing therapeutic support. Duties include domestic support (including cooking and cleaning), taking children on day trips, supporting education and adventure activities. Days can be quite varied as you could be in the home, taking a child to school, going on a beach walk, shopping for clothes, rock climbing or on a trip away for an expedition

Working as a residential support worker (RSW) is a demanding, yet rewarding job. We do our best at Afon Goch Children’s Homes Ltd to look after our staff to accommodate the working pattern that best fits your needs and lifestyle.

Essential skills and responsibilities for the position include:

- Resilience (you will face challenging behaviour: there will be support)
- Child focused (it’s all about the child)
- Organised and reliable record-keeping skills
- Open to training and development
- Open to reflective practice and constructive criticism
- Due to a high volume of paperwork, computer literacy is a must for this position.
- We have company vehicles, but there are times when you might need to use your personal vehicle to take children between the homes and short trips. Therefore, you will need to have proof of business insurance (most insurance companies do not charge extra for business insurance).
- There will be ongoing training: particularly in behaviour management techniques, attachment theory training and how to manage a range of behaviours.

**Job Type**: Full-time and permanent.

**Location**: Near Bangor and Anglesey
