Behind the scenes, the House of Commons Service is made up of more than 3,000 employees who support and facilitate the smooth day to day running of the House. They provide professional services to Members of Parliament, their staff, and the wider parliamentary community.

The In House Services team aims to deliver a comfortable, safe and efficient environment for Members, their staff and staff of the House to work in; as well as providing a welcoming and functional environment for all visitors to the House of Commons.

The Serjeant at Arms is responsible for keeping order within the Commons part of the parliamentary estate. There are also some ceremonial aspects to the role. The Serjeant at Arms directorate is part of In-House Services

Doorkeepers are required to wear the uniform provided.

Physical fitness is required in order to effectively perform Doorkeeper duties. The posts involve standing for long periods and may require you to physically restrain an individual.

The hours of this post are variable based on a shift system, which fall broadly between 07:00 and 00:30, 5 out of 7 days per week and includes Saturdays. On occasions where the House may sit later than the stated hours, Doorkeepers would be expected to remain.

In conjunction with line management, the Doorkeeper can balance any additional hours worked with non-sitting days to achieve the net conditioned hours. An unsociable hours payment may be claimed.

**Job description**:
he Doorkeeper team is a busy section which is fully committed to the professional working of the House.

Event Doorkeepers are responsible for maintaining security, staffing static security posts around the Palace and providing excellent customer service to Members and others. On occasion Doorkeepers assist with ceremonial duties and external events.

Some of the key responsibilities include:

- Maintaining the security of the House of Commons preventing unauthorised access into the estate and assisting with evacuation.
- To recognise every Member of Parliament and control access to various locations. Facilitating unimpeded and appropriate access by Members as required
- Advising and assisting Members, Members’ guests, Staff and the public with regards to access and access regulations.

**Person specification**:

- Ability to work reliably and flexibly as part of a team within a complex, challenging and changing environment, upholding the principles of equality, diversity and inclusion at all times
- The ability to exercise sound judgement, take the initiative and demonstrate assertiveness in a difficult situation
- Good interpersonal and customer service skills, with the ability to deal tactfully and confidently with people at all levels
- Must be able to communicates clearly, concisely and effectively both orally and in writing to variety audience
- Proven practical experience and knowledge of security measures in an environment with public access
