Band 8A Scientific Computing Lead in Radiotherapy Physics

The main role of this post is to lead the provision of Scientific Computing support for clinical services within the Radiotherapy Physics Section.

The post holder will also take a leading role in initiating and implementing new techniques and equipment.

This post has a direct impact on patient treatments and occasionally brings the post holder into direct contact with patients during their treatment.

The post holder will be expected to liaise with a wide range of staff in Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering, the Berkshire Cancer Centre, and with Trust IM&T teams.

MAIN DUTIES

To lead the provision of Scientific Computing services within Radiotherapy Physics, liaising closely with the Radiotherapy Engineering team, Senior Radiotherapy Physics team, and Trust IM&T. To also liaise and work alongside the Specialist Radiotherapy Radiographer for IM&T and the Scientific Computing group within MPCE.

Take responsibility as scientific lead for IM&T where these responsibilities include routine provision, development and implementation of new policies, procedures and work instructions; interpretation and implementation of legislation and professional guidelines for the specialist area.

To take responsibility for overseeing the development, design, testing and version control of in-house software & scripts.

To initiate, project manage and deliver, relevant developments in the services provided by the Radiotherapy Physics Section.

The Radiotherapy Physics Section is responsible for providing clinical scientific and technical support to the Berkshire Cancer Centre within the Royal Berkshire Hospitals NHS Trust.

**Functions include**: Calibration and maintenance of radiotherapy treatment and imaging equipment, radiotherapy planning for external beam and brachytherapy treatments, radiotherapy-related IT infrastructure, connectivity and software, advising clinical staff on scientific and technical issues, ensuring the safety of patients and staff in a hazardous environment which includes exposure to high levels of ionising radiation, ensuring equipment is operating safely and effectively and the evaluation, selection, procurement, installation, acceptance testing and commissioning of equipment.

RESPONSIBILITIES

**Clinical Scientific**:
To provide expert advice on the safe use and deployment of software medical devices.

To take responsibility for the day-to-day management of IT systems that fall within the services provided by Radiotherapy Physics.

To be able to use specialised computer software and hardware, adapt computer systems and develop software solutions to meet the needs of the Radiotherapy Physics Section.

To investigate problems, find solutions and implement changes in these areas of work.

Where appropriate to contribute to deputise for senior colleagues as required.

To take a leading role in developing services within Radiotherapy Physics, taking responsibility for project management to ensure that projects are completed within appropriate timescales.

Where appropriate, to perform treatment planning for external beam and/or brachytherapy treatments and to independently check plans.

Where appropriate, to be responsible for the scientific accuracy of radiation treatment calculations and checks and treatment verification.

Maintain HCPC registration and an agreed programme of CPD.

Demonstrate standards of behaviour consistent with the 5 domains of Good Scientific Practice; Professional Practice, Scientific Practice, Clinical Practice, Research and Development and Innovation and Clinical Leadership.

Ensure that all aspects of the work are provided in accordance with the Quality Management System, and conform to relevant legislation, national protocols and Trust policies.

**Managerial**:
To prioritise and manage own work to meet agreed outcomes and deadlines.

To ensure there is careful record keeping and storage of all work performed and that projects are correctly signed off when completed.

**Teaching and Training**:
To participate in the training and supervision of Clinical Scientists and other staff groups working in radiotherapy physics.

To participate in other teaching activities relevant to the Radiotherapy Physics Section.
