**20 hours per week, hours between 14:00-18:00**

We are looking for a flexible and hardworking individual who will play a key role in maintaining our site and ensuring a welcoming and safe environment for the whole school community. You will have some hands on experience working in a similar field and have a ‘can do’ attitude. You will be able to work with a wide range of people, act on your own initiative and deal with any unexpected problems that arise.

This is a permanent position mainly based at Heltwate School and Jubilee Building in Bretton. We operate a split site, therefore some duties may be required to be undertaken at our St Georges site in Dogsthorpe. Working 20 hours per week (Mon-Fri), 52 weeks per year. Additional hours may be required as need arises.

The working hours will be 14:00 to 18:00am Monday to Friday. However, there will be a requirement to work longer hours during school holidays.

Heltwate is a special school and caters for pupils across the primary and secondary age range who have been identified as having severe learning difficulties. Heltwate encourages pupils to do the best they can to achieve their potential in a safe, supportive and calm environment by a team who supports them throughout their time here.

**Responsibilities**:
**Purpose of the role**

To ensure the security, care and availability of the school building, furniture, fittings and equipment; to ensure a satisfactory physical environment and to promote efficient use of the school’s assets to support the education objectives of the school

**Maintenance of Building and Equipment**:

- Maintaining constant awareness of the physical condition of the grounds, buildings, equipment and furniture, and taking appropriate steps to ensure maintenance and repairs where necessary
- Carry out maintenance and repairs to property, fixtures, fittings and furniture, minor improvement tasks and internal decorating, where such work is within the capabilities of a competent handyperson (within the range of work specified).
- Drawing to attention to the appropriate authorities, via the Premises Manager/School Business Manager, to any repairs or maintenance work which is beyond the competence and responsibility of the caretaking staff.
- Carrying out routine procedures and inspection of ancillary equipment (e.g pumps, batteries, playground equipment etc.)
- Direct workmen and contractors to the sites of repair and maintenance work and inspecting the work of contractors where there is a requirement to sign a satisfaction note.
- Where practicable operating the heating plant so that the required temperatures are maintained in the school premises and that an adequate supply of hot water is available.
- Ensuring that rubbish/recycling is cleared from the school building and site and placed in the appropriate bins for collection
- Ensuring all drains and gullies are free-flowing and clean, clearing blockages should these occur.
- Ensure that those areas of the school environment within the scope of the caretaker’s duties conform to the Health and Safety at Work Act, 1974, and the Fire regulations
- To assist with the school minibuses when required, including, transporting to the local garage, preparing, undertaking safety checks and security of the minibuses.

**Site Security**
- Responsible for ensuring the building, contents and grounds are secured
- Provision of access to the building and grounds to authorised persons at all reasonable times
- In conjunction with the Senior Leadership Team, operate routine security arrangements to prevent/deter unauthorised access to the site and buildings and to minimise theft and vandalism
- Requesting unauthorised users of the site to leave; calling for the attendance of the police if necessary
- Unlocking of gates and entrance doors and checking as far as possible that the grounds and premises have not been disturbed. Switching on of lights and opening of windows as might be required

**Health & Safety**
- To be on emergency call lists and to provide such access to school as may be required outside the normal hours of opening. To include access in times of flood, snow or other emergencies
- Undertake routine procedures and inspection as required for statutory compliance (e.g weekly fire alarm testing, flushing regimes, playground checks etc) and update the schools electronic records.
- To undertake emergency cleaning in the absence of cleaning staff during normal school times e.g spillage of paint, children being sick etc.
