Murray Edwards is an outstanding, friendly community, with a pioneering history of promoting women’s leadership and achievement. Founded in 1954 as New Hall, the college has carved out a distinctive reputation for attracting women from a broad spread of backgrounds and, in this 70th year since its foundation, the college is actively redefining the extraordinary value and purpose of a college for women.
Comprising 67 Fellows, around 550 undergraduate and postgraduate students, and a dedicated team of 120 professional services staff, Murray Edwards is a college for women with ambition, committed to furthering academic excellence and gender equality. We are an open and inclusive community where we champion women’s status in society and the workplace as well as sharing women’s views on major societal issues. The pursuit of intellectual excellence is coupled with a broad range of activities that develop the whole individual. We are also proud to be the home of the Women’s Art Collection, the largest collection of art by women in Europe.
We now seek to appoint a new Senior Tutor as a key member of the college leadership team. We seek to enhance our academic performance through advancing excellence and innovation across all disciplines, in an inclusive, fulfilling and supportive context. The Senior Tutor has an all-encompassing brief to shape the academic policies and practices of the College. Working within the distinctive governance structure of the collegiate University, the Senior Tutor takes the lead in developing, coordinating, supporting, and managing the educational offer and academic life at Murray Edwards. They are responsible for ensuring that teaching and learning in college is of the highest quality, and have strategic oversight of admissions, outreach and widening participation. They also oversee and promote the implementation of a full range of policies and practices to support student wellbeing. Within the University, the Senior Tutor represents the College on all matters relating to admissions, teaching and learning, and student welfare, collaborating with colleagues across the collegiate system and wider University. Reporting to the College Council and President Dorothy Byrne, the Senior Tutor will be an influential and credible advocate, bringing analysis and insight to all academic matters, and determination to deliver the excellent education and empowerment of brilliant women which is at the heart of the College’s mission.
It is an exciting time to join Murray Edwards: impactful new strategic initiatives on wellbeing, student development and widening participation are now being implemented to strengthen the delivery of our core academic purpose. We seek a dynamic leader with strategic vision, a strong track record in teaching, learning and research, and deep understanding of the challenges facing scholars at all levels in higher education. The Senior Tutor will be able to command the respect of colleagues, work collaboratively in a collegiate setting, and operate with high levels of interpersonal, management and organisational skills. This position has the opportunity to make a major contribution to strengthening Murray Edwards as a place of academic excellence and choice, delivering a truly transformative experience to students from a diverse range of backgrounds.
