Junior Assistant Clinician (Intern) (2 Posts)
The Glasgow Equine Hospital are looking to appoint Junior Assistant Clinicians (Intern) to deliver and have responsibility for equine clinical patient care under the supervision of experienced and specialist staff. You will participate and assist in the hospital’s activities, which include medicine and surgery services, undergraduate student teaching and our 24/7 emergency service. In addition, you will contribute to the 24/7 operation of the hospital by working a pattern, which includes night shifts (shared with colleagues, aiming for an overall frequency of 1:4). In all these activities, you will support student training by providing instruction, supervision and feedback, for which you will receive appropriate training.
These posts are offered on a 1 year fixed term basis, such that they offer the early stage clinical experience required in preparation for further specialist training, through Residencies and Masters formal training programmes. While appointments may be extended for a short fixed-term period where this would be in the mutual interest, in the interests of ensuring that veterinary career development is supported, and to assist with recruitment to the University’s Residency and Masters Programmes, the one year duration will remain the normal term.
The Glasgow Equine Hospital is accredited by the RCVS Practice Standards Scheme as an Equine Veterinary Hospital, which includes assessment in categories such as client services, in-patient services, diagnostic services, team and professional responsibility and ambulatory services. The Veterinary School has recently been rated 7th in the World and 1st in the UK for quality of education and training. Clinical audit is undertaken formally, and staff maintain clinical and research links with leading veterinary authorities worldwide, in order to expand skill sets.

**Job purpose**
To deliver and have responsibility for equine clinical patient care under the supervision of experienced and specialist staff. Junior Assistant Clinicians will participate and assist in the hospital’s activities which include medicine and surgery services, undergraduate student teaching and 24/7 emergency service.

**Main Duties and Responsibilities**
1. In a developing capacity, provide qualified veterinary services by assisting in the provision of a high standard of veterinary care to referred patients, under direction from senior colleagues.
2. Take part in the junior clinician rota within the hospital and assist in the organisation of the rota.
3. Attend and participate in various clinical rounds, seminars and journal clubs.
4. Assess and present appropriate clinical case material and recommendations at rounds and seminars as directed by senior clinicians.
5. Be involved in clinical research projects throughout the hospital (for example by surplus sample storage, data collection etc.).
6. Prepare and submit for publication during the first year at least one technical/ professional publication alone or in conjunction with others.
7. Undertake appropriate verbal and written communication with owners, referring practices and other primary care practices as directed by senior staff.
8. Use the hospital record system to add charges, record clinical observations and communications, ensuring that record keeping complied with clinical standards, relevant legislation and local practices.
9. Prepare for and undertake training through supervised exposure to referred cases, within the areas stated above on a rotational basis.
10. Deliver ad hoc instruction and supervision of undergraduate students and provide feedback on their performance.
11. Maintain own CPD record, case log and engage in self-reflection and private study.

**Knowledge/Qualifications**

**Essential**
A1. A degree that is registerable with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.
A2. Knowledge of national veterinary regulations and practices.
A3. A formal qualification in spoken and written English, should the applicant use English as a foreign language.

**Desirable**
B1. Post-graduate academic achievement relative to peer group (such as, publishing technical articles).

**Skills**

**Essential**
C1. Practical clinical skills sufficient to carry out tasks such as drug medication, bandaging, radiography, basic surgery, placement of intravenous catheters etc. independently.
C2. Horse handling skills that facilitate working safely with horses.
C3. Ability to deliver high standards of clinical care under the direction of others.
C4. Written and spoken English communication skills which allow effective information exchange with clients, students and staff.
C5. Ability to work in a team.
C6. High standards of professional ethics.
C7. Motivation to undertake scholarship.
