**Job summary**:
This is an exciting time to join the Department for International Trade (DIT). The work we do has a real impact on jobs and growth across the United Kingdom. Our mission is to help businesses export, drive inward and outward investment, negotiate market access and trade deals, and to advocate free trade. We are an international department based in 108 countries, and we work closely with our colleagues worldwide. Working in DIT you will have the opportunity to shape the UK’s international trade agenda for years to come.
Our team is part of the Global Trade & Delivery Directorate in DIT, responsible for influencing global rules and managing the UK's relationship with the WTO and other multilateral forums, using the UK’s independent voice to advocate for and reform the rules based international system.
The role sits in a small team (7 posts ranging from G6 to HEO) which is responsible for ensuring a central grip on multilateral negotiations and policy development. This ensures that the multilateral team has a good understanding of wider DIT policy objectives, can fulfil their responsibilities for coherent and effective delivery of DIT and HMG multilateral trade priorities, and can manage the trade-offs and tensions between different policy files.
Specifically, this role is responsible for supporting the governance of DIT multilateral trade policy and linking to wider DIT policy teams. The role is important to establishing UK credibility on a range of key policy objectives that will be critical to protecting UK businesses from unfair trade practices and strengthening global trade rules. The role will support policy development in some of these critical areas in the lead up to the G7, G20 and WTO Ministerial Conference next year.
**Job description**:
- Implement negotiations programme management: working with other teams in DIT and other government departments, and building strong relationships, to ensure the multilateral policy tracker is up to date and well understood, with clear positions and timelines.
- Identifying and analysing policy tensions and alignments: using our policy tracker and understanding of UK positions to identify where and how policies interact with each other, and where there are cross-cutting issues to consider and reporting regularly to seniors to determine how we address emerging issues and delivery risks.
- Supporting the multilateral strategy board: providing secretariat support for this key governance board, including preparing papers and minutes.
- Supporting negotiations and policy development: where the team is commissioned to assist with policy development for negotiation priorities, take ownership of questions or policy areas for the team, working with the relevant policy team to resolve outstanding questions and ensure a credible and robust UK position.
- Supporting senior negotiations teams: where negotiation teams attend G7, G20, WTO or Mini-Ministerial, provide logístical and secretariat support as needed.
**Hybrid Working**
Please be aware that this role can only be worked from within the UK and not overseas.
Informal hybrid working arrangements will be available as agreed with the vacancy manager and in line with the requirements of the role.
Most DIT employees will be working a hybrid pattern, spending 2-3 days a week (pro rata) in an office, on average. If your office location is London, you will be eligible to receive London weighting.
**Person specification**:
**Essential Criteria**
- Ability to quickly get up to speed in new and complex policy areas.
- Ability to drive forward own work proactively and independently, paying attention to detail on complex issues while often working at pace to tight deadlines.
- Ability to work collaboratively within and across teams, coordinating decision-making, and the ability to build and maintain long lasting working relationship.
- Ability to operate in a fast-paced environment under tight time constraints, prioritise competing demands, and remaining flexible and adaptable.
**Desirable Criteria**
- Knowledge or experience of trade policy.
- You will be a motivated, conscientious, hardworking and highly organised team player who has an eye for detail and can communicate effectively with different audiences. You will help us maintain and improve our inclusive and diverse team environment.
- You will have the ability to be proactive and to develop and take forward
