Slough, United Kingdom Refugee Youth Service UK CIC Full time

**Salary Full-time Equivalent: £27,000 - £30,000**

**About the Position**

**About the project**

The _No Children in Hotels_ project helps age disputed asylum-seeking children to leave these hotel accommodations and enter the appropriate care systems. The project team visits children at their accommodations to conduct welfare checks, and subsequently makes referrals to statutory services and legal firms to make this happen.

In addition to these vital interventions is the implementation of recreational activities and connection with local activity and service providers, which offer immediate respite to these vulnerable children. Furthermore, by establishing trusted relationships with them, their well-being is actively monitored and the alarm is swiftly raised when signs of deteriorating mental health emerge.

**Key Areas of Accountability**

**Youth Support Work**
- Build positive, professional and trusting relationships with age-disputed children, providing holistic welfare based support
- Oversee child-friendly and child-focused activities, in partnership with Session Support Workers
- Research youth groups, community spaces, and activities local to where the child resides
- Signpost/assist children in engaging with local groups and activities as a means of promoting their wellbeing and developing their local support network

**Casework**
- Ensure that all children have the necessary information regarding their rights in relation to the asylum process, housing, statutory social care and education
- Communicate with and refer children to local authorities, statutory services and legal firms
- Maintain and develop referral pathways to ensure unaccompanied children get the broad range of support they need
- Support young people in accessing their rights and entitlements, including housing, universal credit and education
- Promote information sharing within the team to ensure continuous and seamless monitoring of all children
- Attend weekly casework supervision meetings, ensuring that each child supported is periodically discussed; contribute new ideas and strategies to other caseworkers to create the best possible outcomes for children
- Provide opinion statements regarding children’s ages, to be used as evidence in their age-disputes
- Oversee the appropriate collection and storage of sensitive information and records in line with data protection regulations and in adherence with relevant policies

**Safeguarding**
- Identify situations of extreme vulnerability or need and follow RYS internal escalation procedures
- Comply with the RYS Code of Conduct, Safeguarding Policy and Data Protection Policy and Procedures
- Ensure that all safeguarding and child protection issues concerning unaccompanied children are responded to appropriately through the policies, procedures and systems that are in place
- Champion & model best safeguarding practices, making sure that Session Workers follow child protection procedures and know what to do if they have concerns about a child’s welfare

**Project Tasks**
- **Building partnerships** - develop and maintain a network of key contacts within local government departments and other organisations, and feed into wider structural campaign work where capacity allows (e.g. Schools for Sanctuary & RMCC)
- **Social media** - assist with content ideas (e.g. flagging key issues young people are facing, taking photos, inviting young people to contribute their direct lived experiences)
- **Develop project resources** - respond to emerging needs of team and YP we support by developing direct practice resource tools and information fact sheets.

**Relevant Profile Characteristics, Qualifications and Experience**
- Essential_
- At least 2 years experience of delivering casework for disadvantaged children and young people in challenging environments and contexts; experience of using case management software and databases
- Proven experience of working with and supporting children and young people from a wide range of backgrounds, without prejudice
- Experience of delivering group activities for children and young people
- A firm belief and commitment to the equal rights of all people, regardless of where they are from or their immigration status
- Good knowledge of children’s rights and related matters
- Proficiency with Google cloud based software including Drive, Sheets and Docs
- Enhanced DBS check (this can be completed by RYS free of charge)
- Desirable _
- A diploma or graduate degree in social work, youth work or associated field

- Lived experience of the issues faced by displaced people
- Experience working in the humanitarian sector
- Drivers Licence and willingness to drive as part of the role
- Ability to converse in any of the languages spoken by children supported: Tigrinya, Amharic, Oromo, Pashto, Dari/Farsi, Arabic etc.
- Experience in information management and editing development
