**The role**:
A Health Physics Surveyor is required for the radiological safety and waste management programme at the ISIS neutron and muon source at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) on the Harwell Campus in Oxfordshire.
- Health Physics Surveyors are part of a team that provides essential health physics radiological monitoring services and radioactive waste management programme to ISIS. Duties include personnel radiation protection, radioactive waste management, radioactive material movement, storage, and keeping records.
- Radiological monitoring is a practical job and involves entering designated radiation and radioactive contamination-controlled areas throughout the ISIS facility. The wearing of personal protective equipment (PPE), including respiratory protective equipment (RPE) in these designated areas is essential.
- Health physics surveyors have daily contact with staff, visitors, and contractors at all levels within the organisation.

**As a Health Physics Surveyor your main responsibilities would be**:

- Routine survey measurements and checks for ionising radiation and radioactive contamination in the ISIS complex
- Assistance with the collection, treatment, characterisation, accounting, and disposal of radioactive waste including decontamination of equipment and facilities
- Operation of plant and equipment for radioactive waste characterisation and treatment
- Provision of routine Health Physics surveillance cover around the ISIS target stations and beamlines, the accelerator and synchrotron and other experimental facilities including implementation of on-the-job dose controls for persons exposed to ionising radiations
- Assisting in the control, movement and accounting of radioactive machine components and experimental samples within the ISIS complex and any subsequent movement off-site
- Posting and updating permanent and temporary radiation and radioactive contamination hazard warning signs as necessary
- Maintenance and function checking of portable and installed radiation and radioactive contamination detection equipment
- Assistance with maintaining a stock of replacement protective wear and equipment for radiological protection
- Cleaning, servicing and maintenance of RPE
- Producing survey reports, inputting into risk assessments, procedures and undertaking record keeping
- Manual handling, crane and forklift work.
- Reporting to the Health Physics and / or Radioactive Waste Operations Team Leaders
- Interacting and providing a service to all ISIS personnel staff, contractors, experimenters, and visitors
- Interacting and communicating with group leaders, section leaders, Radiation Protection Supervisors and Radioactive Material Consignors
- Working closely with ISIS teams particularly operational teams, and the Shift Crew

**You’ll have relevant experience in**:
**Essential**:

- City and Guilds Certificate Stage 1 in Radiation Safety Practice / NVQ Level 2 in Radiation Protection or any other appropriate equivalent.
- Must have practical experience of radiation protection work and knowledge of the Ionising Radiation Regulations 2017.
- Experience of working in designated radiation and radioactive contamination-controlled areas.
- Experience in operating health physics radiation and radioactive contamination monitoring equipment.
- Experience of wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) in a radioactive contaminated environment and medically fit to wear respiratory protective equipment (RPE).
- Experience in the management and processing of radioactive waste.
- Able to produce detailed records and compiling reports, graphs and survey diagrams.
- Experience in the safe use of power tools: hand drills / mag base drills, handheld reciprocating, and band saws.
- Be able to take both verbal and written instructions and to be able to work unsupervised when required.
- Ability to use Microsoft Office packages and be willing to undertake basic training in radioactive waste management database.
- UK full driving license.
- Trained and certificated to operate overhead travelling cranes. Hold a current forklift truck license.

**Desirable**:

- Experience of working within specific radiological containment enclosures.
- Experience of using radioactive waste characterisation equipment.
