Marine Scotland is the lead marine management organisation in Scotland. It was established in April 2009 as a Directorate of the Scottish Government (SG), to integrate core marine functions involving scientific research, compliance monitoring, policy and management of Scotland's seas.

The Marine Research Vessels’ main function is to ensure efficient and effective provision at sea to support the work of the scientific programme within Marine Scotland. Information gathered on research cruises is essential to the success of the scientific programme. To ensure this success both Marine Research Vessels are fitted with a wide range of deployment and recovery facilities for fishing gear and equipment, scientific and environmental sensors, and data gathering systems.

The Marine Protection Vessels are Minna, Jura and Hirta. Minna is 47 metres in length and both Jura and Hirta are 84 metres in length. These vessels carry out patrols which normally last 21 days. Marine Scotland Compliance also operate a number of smaller independent craft within the inshore protection programme. MRV Alba Na Mara and MRV Scotia are 27 metres and 69 metres in length respectively. Research cruises vary in length, but generally are no more than 22 days. All vessels work double crewing allowing for trip on/trip off rostering.

You will be based onboard either our Marine Protection vessels or Marine Research Vessels where you will undertake the role of cook/steward. You will also be required to work in the capacity of either Cook and/or Steward, dependent on vessel requirements

You will follow a marine working pattern which in general is 3 weeks on/off. - is this correct? The Marine Protection Vessels are MPV Minna, MPV Jura and MPV Hirta, these vessels carry out patrols which normally last 21 days. The Research Vessels, MRV Alba Na Mara and MRV Scotia, carry out research cruises that vary in length, but generally are no more than 22 days. All vessels are double manned, permitting trip on/trip off crew rostering.

**Job description**:

- Preparation and cooking of all meals, as per menus, for vessel’s crew and any official visitors or guests.
- Assist Chief Steward, if appropriate, with preparing daily menus.
- Cleaning galley, food handling spaces, refrigerated and dry food store rooms including all equipment, utensils, surfaces and fixtures and ensuring a high standard of hygiene is maintained.
- Serve meals via galley hatch or setting out food at self-servery.
- Assist with storing
- Preparation and cleaning officer cabins and communal areas on board the vessel.
- To note and observe content of relevant fleet instructions and duty rosters.
- Other duties at the discretion of the Commanding Officer or First Officer (Executive).

**Person specification**:

- 1. Ability to prepare and cook all meals as per menus, and the ability to assist Chief Steward, if appropriate, with preparation of these menus and ordering of appropriate stores.
- 2. Excellent organisational skills with the ability to work with the minimum of supervision to produce a high standard nutritious food.
- 3. Knowledge and skills to ensure a high standard of hygiene both in preparation of food and in cleaning galley, food handling spaces and food store rooms.
