At Newman University we take the University’s impact on the environment very seriously. We have recently made some bold statements regarding our environmental performance, mainly our commitment to become carbon negative by 2035. The University has an aggressive carbon management and carbon reduction plan which will support our 2035 ambition. We already produce over 20% of the University’s electricity from solar arrays on our flat roofs and this is expanding every year by between 30kw - 60kw. We have started degassing our heating network and have ambitious masterplan strategies to announce later this year. Newman University wants to be one of the most sustainable universities, in the UK, and we are building the team to deliver this.

The outline of the job is to deliver the green ambitions of Newman University, including maintaining and overseeing the building management system; overseeing our ISO 140001 ISO 50001 environmental and energy accreditation; supporting the reduction of carbon emissions to below zero by the year 2035; taking responsibility for our own developed environmental management system, promotion of ‘Green’ events and environmental campaigns; ensuring all legislation relating to environmental issues is adhered too across the University.

In addition, the postholder will be responsible for the energy management and reading 104 local meters weekly, as well as ensuring that building materials, including maintenance replacements, are logged and comply with building regulations. The postholder will be responsible for the University’s carbon footprint; staff and student communications including the running of relevant social media accounts, the Newman goes Green campaign; and work with local community groups. The postholder will regularly review our environmental impact and risk assessments, fire audits and support local fire inspections; drive the green agenda within all refurbishment and capital projects; be responsible for the travel plan and work closely with the Students’ Union as well as liaising with local agencies including Birmingham City Council, Severn Trent, West Midlands Fire Service and the Environmental Agency.
