Edinburgh, United Kingdom Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) Full time

Subsurface Geoscientist
UKRI - NERC - BGS
Location: This role is based at the BGS offices in Edinburgh, which are situated on the Heriot-Watt University campus

**Salary**: salary range is £25,702 to £27,938 (depending on qualifications and experience)
Grade: UKRI - Band C
Hours: Full-time - 37 hours a week (some flexible working options may be available, including a small amount of remote working, in line with BGS policy)
Contract type: Permanent
Closing date: 6th February 2023

A great benefits package is offered, including an outstanding pension scheme, 30 days annual leave plus bank holidays, and access to flexi-time

**About the role**

The Decarbonisation and Resource Management (DRM) challenge area fits within the context of the increased need to decarbonise energy and industry, to use resources more optimally, combined with driven global competition for resources and a need to expand the delivery of affordable, sustainable energy across the world. Geological disposal of radioactive waste is a key research area within this challenge. Deep geological disposal is the solution to the long-term, safe management of radioactive waste, but it requires understanding of the geology from the surface to depth, to safely site a repository.

This public-good science forms a core part of the BGS role as the UK’s national geological survey. This work cross cuts the wider BGS programme, involving geologists and other specialists from across the BGS.

**About you**

You can demonstrate effective geological interpretation skills, including primary geological (sedimentological) observation, wireline analysis, and seismic interpretation. You have an understanding of sedimentary processes and products (deposits) and are able to relate these to both local and basin scale controls. You understand the range of stratigraphical approaches applicable to geological characterisation (e.g., sequence stratigraphy, lithostratigraphy, and biostratigraphy).

You possess knowledge of the latest approaches applicable to the characterisation of sedimentary systems, including investigation techniques and applied considerations. You can work confidently with, and develop robust geological interpretations from, diverse geoscientific data that may include, well/borehole data, field-observations, and 2D/3D seismic. Familiarity with seismic interpretation software (e.g., Petrel or similar), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and 3D geological modelling software to integrate, and interpret spatial geoscientific data is an advantage to this role, however training will be provided.

Although the position is primarily office-based, fieldwork may play an important part of the role. You will be required to travel and work away from home. This may include periods of fieldwork, research visits, and meetings with collaborators. Despite this role being primarily UK-based, you may be involved in similar work as part of BGS’s international programme, including overseas office-based, and field-based activities.

Please also refer to the additional specific essential and desirable skills criteria for this post.

**About us**

The British Geological Survey (BGS) is an applied geoscience research centre that belongs to UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and is affiliated to the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). It is a world leading geological survey whose core mission is to advise government of science related to the subsurface and to undertake applied research to solve earth and environmental issues, both in the UK and globally. It is funded directly by UKRI, as well as through research grants and private sector contracts.

BGS has an annual budget of approximately £60 million and employs 650 people. It has two main sites: a head office in Keyworth near Nottingham, and the Lyell Centre, which is a collaboration with Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh. BGS works with more than 150 private sector organisations, has close links with 40 universities, and sponsors approximately 100 PhD students each year.

We strive to promote equality and diversity across our organisation in order to continuously improve our scientific and organisational efficiency As such, we aim to have a workforce with employees from all backgrounds with people who are passionate about earth science and who share our dedication to work for the good of the environment and the benefit of society.

**How to apply**

Applicants are required to include a cover letter outlining their suitability for this role. We would stress the importance of this paperwork in our selection process.
