**You must have DIRECT experience either professional or personal of the disability benefits system as this is crucial for this post.**

**Purpose**:
To support clients referred specifically to claim Personal Independence Payment and Attendance Allowance

To support clients access cost of living support

**The post holder is responsible for**:
Assessing a client's situation.

Visiting clients at their homes if necessary.

Researching information using reference material and relevant websites.

Answering questions and giving advice on welfare benefits

Writing reports and/or appeal submissions.

Assisting claimants with preparing appeals against decisions to refuse or stop benefits

Working with other agencies and organisations on behalf of clients.

Keeping confidential and up to date records using Charity Log database.

Organising publicity to encourage the public to claim benefits they are entitled to.

Work pro-actively with GP surgeries and other community/voluntary organisations that support the community from the area as determined by the terms of the grant.

To support carers of clients by signposting them to services which can support their needs.

To work collectively with colleagues to ensure the best possible service and outcome for our clients.

**General Matters**

To be available for support sessions and contribute to the activities of DISH

To report any safeguarding issues.

To observe DISH’s policies always, especially those relating to Equal Opportunities, Safeguarding, Confidentiality and Health & Safety.

Any other duties appropriate to the post as required by the manager.

**Person Specification**

The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate the following skills and abilities:
The ability to deal sensitively with families going through the benefits process

At least a year’s experience in this field either in a paid or voluntary capacity

The ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, especially with challenging clients

The ability to cope with challenging situations, manage own time and deal with competing demands.

Proven ability to undertake casework and record effectively and appropriately, both the case itself and supporting data as may be required by the project

A commitment to self-development, and the ability to work alone.

Keyboard skills and the ability to operate a computer.

Hold a current valid driving licence and have unrestricted use of private transport (desirable).

**Job Type**: Fixed term contract
Contract length: 12 months

**Salary**: £12,561.53 per year
