This is an exciting opportunity to join Gateshead’s Council’s team, which is being expanded as the Council takes forward its Thrive strategy, with health and wellbeing at its heart, and a strong commitment to embed health inequality research throughout. We are seeking to appoint 2 full time, Health Inequalities Research Portfolio Lead (Grade K), fixed term to 30 September 2027.

This is a new, innovative post that will lead the development of a health inequality research portfolio at Gateshead Council, in one of the following areas
- Public Health and Wellbeing
- Children, Adults and Families
- Housing, Environment and Healthy Communities
- Economy, Innovation and Growth
- Resources and Digital
- Corporate Services and Governance

Working closely with colleagues across the Public Health Team and other Council services and external stakeholders, this will involve identifying research opportunities, designing research, using evidence-based interventions, interpreting evidence, and excitingly have the opportunity to conduct research based on service need through the lens of health inequalities.

You will have responsibility for creating and leading a research portfolio within your specific area, developing strong professional relationships to enable research and promoting a culture of research across all council activity. You will have opportunities to influence local and national policy based on the outcomes of your research, and will be fully supported by colleagues from across the council, academia and the Gateshead system.

Your role will involve hands on involvement in the entire research journey from planning, design through to participation and dissemination. You will have highly developed research skills and the ability to interpret and present complex and/or sensitive information clearly in a variety of forms for a range of professional and lay audiences.

You will hold a relevant degree or professional qualification, or an equivalent level of experience in a similar role.
