Oxford, United Kingdom New College Oxford Full time

The College intends to appoint a full-time Assistant Organist with effect from 1 September 2024.

The principal duties of the Assistant will be to accompany the Chapel Choir, assist with the training of the choristers, and deputize for the Organist when he is absent. The Assistant also plays a key role in the administration of the choir, including managing the choir library, overseeing the maintenance of the chapel organ, and curating the weekly organ recitals. Development of the choir’s outreach and recruitment, including the choir’s sixth-from singing scheme are also an important part of the post, and the successful applicant will also be required to teach early stage music undergraduates as part of the University of Oxford music course. He or she will also play a key role in the supervision of the choristers, along with the Organist and New College School staff. The successful applicant will have time and opportunity to develop his or her personal musical career alongside the post.

The Assistant will be required to keep school terms (these being longer than the University Terms during which the Choir sings its daily offices.) He/she will also be expected to be available for the periods when the Choir tours and/or records; the successful applicant must be prepared to be flexible in this regard.

The annual salary will be equivalent to Grade 5 on the University of Oxford pay scales, according to experience (£28,759-£33,966pa). The postholder is entitled to a small college flat (on which rent is paid), as well as teaching space.
