Research Associate in Rich Tomography

Manchester, United Kingdom The University of Manchester Full time

Rich tomography methods measure more than a scalar along each ray through an object. This could be a spectrum, a diffraction pattern or a change in polarization state. From this data we aim to reconstruct more than just a scalar image. In polarimetric neutron tomography we aim to reconstruct a 3D image of a magnetic field. From neutron spectra we deduce information about the strain in a polycrystalline material. From x-ray and electron diffraction data we aim to deduce the distribution of directional properties including strain. Our recently funded EPSRC project Rich Tomography for advanced materials aims to provide a unified software framework for these rich tomography methods and develop reconstruction algorithms that work with experimental data, and to advance the measurement techniques as tools for developing advanced materials. The project is led by Prof William Lionheart in the Department of Mathematics at Manchester. The other investigators are: Philip Withers FRS, regius professor on the Department of Materials and Chief Scientist of the Henry Royce Institute for advanced Materials who is an expert in the use of tomography for advanced materials; Prof Alexander Korsunsky at Oxford who is an expert in neutron and x-ray diffraction tomography for advanced materials; Prof Paul Midgley FRS at Cambridge who is materials scientist and leading authority on transmission electron micoscope tomography; Dr Genoveva Burca who is an Instrument Scientist at the IMAT Neutron Imaging and Diffraction, STFC, ISIS Facility; Dr Søren Schmidt who is a Senior Scientist at the European Spalation Source and is a pioneer of polarimetric neutron tomography. We also work with Evalina Ametva at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology who was a coauthor of the research proposal.

**Overall Purpose of the Job**

With the Pis and CoIs and their teams, the Research Associate on this project will design numerical algorithms for rich tomography in the context of the CCPi CIL library. They will be responsible for software implementation of these algorithms and with our collaborators and other PDRAs will test the algorithms on real data. They will be a co-author on academic papers and conference presentations produced by this project taking a leading role especially on those with a software and algorithms focus. The appointment will be in the School of Mathematics in the Inverse Problems Group.
