Do you enjoy working with people, care about the environment and like working as part of a team?

Purpose of Role:
When you join Hertfordshire County Council, you will have a fantastic opportunity to directly influence a front-line service for residents. Our reuse shops sell items that would otherwise have been thrown away at the recycling centres. You’ll receive training on assessing if items are suitable for sale and well as assisting community groups and charities with donations from the reuse shop.

Challenges and Opportunities:
You will need to be fit as you will be moving stock from collection points into the shop and helping to take furniture to people’s cars, as well as stacking items for storage. It will involve working at weekends and most bank holidays as the shops are open then.

You’ll get involved with testing electrical items for sale and logging details (full training given), cleaning items, attractively displaying them for sale and taking accurate payment for them. It will also involve posting on our Facebook page and answering queries.

Technical Skills:
We’re looking for an enthusiastic team player with an ability to use their own initiative, get on with tasks and actively help to improve the service.

You will be able to communicate clearly and politely with customers and members of the team. Be able to manage money and able to use a computer or be willing to learn.

You may be required to drive between shops (mileage can be claimed for) in your own vehicle to provide assistance and cover as required.

In this job you’ll get to interact with the public and make a real difference by selling good quality, low cost items that would have otherwise gone to waste. Residents love this opportunity to pick up a bargain and help the environment at the same time. It’s also rewarding to work with local charities and community groups by arranging donations.
