We are looking to recruit a craftsperson to work as part of the land management team, based on York Beat.

**Job description**:
**Embed a safety-first culture in our teams - look out and look after**

Ensure personal safety at all times by following job risk assessments, using lone working system and by carrying out PPE and safety checks, in compliance with policy and Health and Safety guidance. Reporting of incidents and near misses into accident reporting system via supervisor.

**Key responsibilities**

Surveying - Undertake monitoring and data-gathering tasks such as tree safety inspections, hazards, barriers, fence line, boundary inspections and camera security data handling. Carry out tree density assessment surveys on replanted sites, vegetation, and pest surveys. Assist supervisor with ground preparation spacing checks and contractor planting checks.

Undertake timber volume plotting and monitoring work including roadside stock measurement, marking of constraint boundaries and forest health surveys as required. Assist supervisor with stock taking, marking and tagging of trees for harvesting along with other harvesting operations and logistics work.

Logistics and Security - Carry out forest security measures as requested. Report/investigate fly-tipped waste and dispose of non-hazardous materials as directed, liaising as appropriate with supervisor.

Contribute to the delivery of key programmes by providing a support service in transporting essential materials, consumables, plants etc. to work and District depot sites.
Maintain vehicles, machinery, tools and equipment in accordance with manufactures instructions and best practice guidelines. Carry out or arrange to be carried out any repairs as necessary.

Vegetation control -** **Seasonal strimming and mowing of vegetation on recreation facilities, gateways and around forest furniture.

Customer Service and visitor welcome, engage with visitors and offer help and support on site. Answer general enquiries or pass to the correct member of staff to deal with.

**Person specification**:
**Essential**:

- Experience of practical work in the countryside and a general understanding of forestry, conservation, and countryside related issues
- A familiarity of a variety of hand tools and an ability to demonstrate competence in their use.
- Full UK Driving Licence. The duties of this post require the applicant to have a full current driving licence that enables them to drive in the UK. However, the Forestry Commission is willing to consider any proposals put forward by applicants that would allow them to do the job by any other means.

**Desirable**:

- NPTC certification and experience or equivalent in at least one of the following: manual felling with chainsaw (201,202,203 or equivalent), clearing saw/brush cutter, or related operations.
- Experience of working on practical tasks which might include working with volunteers and/or teams.
