**The Department**

The Philosophy Department at Durham University is a centre for world-leading research in a wide range of fields, with four main research clusters: ‘Aesthetics, Ethics and Politics’; ‘History of Philosophy’; ‘Mind, Language and Metaphysics’ and ‘Science, Medicine and Society’. It is home to the Centre for Humanities Engaging Science and Society (CHESS) and has strong links with other interdisciplinary research centres and institutes at Durham. At postgraduate and undergraduate level, students can choose from a wide range of topics spanning the whole discipline of philosophy. The Department has one of the largest PhD programmes in the UK, and many of our students go on to pursue highly successful academic careers.

Applications are invited for the post of Assistant Professor (Education) in Philosophy. This post, which arises due to the Department’s successful participation in the Master in Data Science programme, offers an exciting opportunity to make a major contribution to the development of internationally excellent teaching and scholarship in an interdisciplinary setting, while allowing you unrivalled opportunities to progress and embed your career in an exciting and progressive institution. This post offers the opportunity to pursue an academic career focussed on contributing to innovative university education of the highest quality. The post will involve a significant teaching load, which may extend into the summer period, but there will opportunities for scholarship and administrative duties which relate to education and pedagogy.

**Assistant Professors (Education) at Durham**

Assistant Professors (Education) contribute to teaching, innovation and citizenship whilst fully focussing on the key skills which will secure their progression. Teaching quality and innovation is critical to ensure a first-class learning environment and curricula for all our students. You will be supported to develop your teaching expertise and to engage in teaching innovation and scholarship.

Assistant Professors (Education) are encouraged to engage in wider citizenship to support their own development, their department and their wider discipline, and to contribute to student experience.

You will be expected to engage in scholarship related to pedagogy, noting that any other independent research (beyond pedagogy) is not part of this post. The appointment will be on the University’s ‘Education Track’ career path, which provides clearly defined opportunities for progression against defined criteria.

**Assistant Professor (Education) in Philosophy**

**Key responsibilities**:

- To deliver lectures, seminars and tutorials at undergraduate and taught postgraduate levels, with the opportunity to teach more widely within the Department, as well as engaging in related activity such as assessment;
- Engagement in pedagogic activity at Departmental level that supports a high quality, academic professional community of practice within the Department and beyond;
- Maintain an active membership and engagement with a professional body (e.g. HEA or discipline-specific bodies);
- Contribute to ongoing curriculum development, demonstrating innovation in educational practice to enhance the quality of the educational environment in the Department and wider University in support of the Department’s continuing emphasis on international excellence;
